Just to start, this is not a solicitation... I would just like to get the opinion of as many on the board as possible as this is a pretty diverse group. I was talking with a friend who has a small hotel for sale and he knows he is not in a good economy to sell... I suggested that he do a sort of lottery like I have been seeing some people do with homes in the States. He would have to sell about 25,000 - 30,000 tickets at $100. Is this feasible or am I just wasting his time?

My dos colones...

That's a sh*t load of tickets to sell at $100 a pop! Are there 25,000 people who are interested in owning a "small hotel"?

25,000 X $100 = $2.5 million. Just how small is this hotel?

All good points and what I am trying to figure out... It is a lot of tickets to sell. Would have to figure out where to advertise and market it... I figured there might be enough gambler types to cover a good number..... And then maybe some potential investors who might buy multiples...... Just don't know.

It would seem to me that he would have to tell those who purchase tickets the minimum ticket sales necessary to hold the drawing, the maximum tickets that will be sold and the money put into an escrow account so that if will be refunded in case the minimum sales are not realized. I think there would also have to be a deadline of when the tickets sales would have reached the minimum and the money refunded if that deadline was not met. Otherwise he could tie up the money for years.

Then it might work but certainly would require a lot of legwork to reach the minimum sales required.

Very good points ID and you are absolutely right..... After I posted I thought that I should have written that. And if it was done, it would be done in the most legit way possible to insure that it is on the up and up.. Which would not be a problem as my friend is a boyscout and does everyting by the book down here...

ThirdWorld, one way to do it is to sell it on E-Bay. Western clearly said the idea was a load of shit, but from what I have seen for sale on E-Bay, there is a lot of shit being sold at a relatively high asking price.

It is important to remember what Irish Drifter said about disclosures; in fact some specific disclosures would have to be made or he could run afoul of the gaming laws in at least one state that I know of.

I don't get quoted often and don't appreciate being mis-quoted!

This is what I really said: That's a sh*t load of tickets to sell at $100 a pop!

My comment was regarding the quantity and difficulty of tickets to sell. Not the validity of the scheme. There is a great deal of difference in the meaning of the two statements.
