Has anyone else been keeping up with the CRC going right down the crapper along with the dollar?

When I was in CR in May the exchange rate was 490 to 1. Now it's 537 to 1.

This looks like stabilization to me. When I was in CR in November 2006, it was 530 (or so) to US$1.

If they want to keep the Colon cliff diving against the already troubled dollar, they are on the right track by closing the MPs. Bring less dollars down here and we can watch the swan dive.

On the average plane, what percentage are mongers? I'd say the percentage is small. I think they could shut down every MP in town and it wouldn't affect anyone other than a few hundred hookers and their K*ds.... not even a blip on the radar really when one considers that the population is 4 million. It think we over estimate our contribution to the economy in Costa Rica........ YMMV.

The dollar... it will survive, because it is backed up by five hundred thousand nukes. The nuke standard replaced the gold standard.

As far as dollars being backed up by nukes, I believe the same was true of the Ruble, no?

Nuke comment aside, there are estimated to be at least 7000 sex workers in San Jose, which is more than a few hundred. I don't think that mongers are the main driving force behind the tourism dollar, but I also don't think it is negligible. It's not just the working girls, it's casinos, hotels, gringos living here and much more. With an economy as feeble as Costa Rica, writing off millions of dollars in any kind of activity isn't a great idea.

While I don't agree with this last statement, I don't disagree with it either. There is an impact, but only in San Jose and maybe Jaco. Think of it in this way... If all mongers would stop coming, would there be an impact? What would these working girls and their families eat? Where would they work?

Like Bilko said, there are a few thousand sex workers in SJ, not just a few hundred.

Second, the average monger spends a lot more money than the average eco-tourist in CR. I would say that the average spent per monger spens (aside from air) is well over $1,500 per person. When you have a family of 4 come, they may not spend $1,500 combined.

We know guys who come and drop $4-5K in CR a couple times per year.

Colon @ 548! I can't afford not to go to CR :)
Quote:
Colón Down 21%
During the last two years, the Costa Rican currency, the colón, has lost 21 percent of its purchasing power.

This figure results from dividing the consumer price index in July 2006 (the year which serves as the basis for the new index) into de one for August 2008.
The price index in Costa Rica takes in the cost of 292 goods and services.

It takes today ¢548 colones to purchased one US dollar, while on the day last year ¢516 colones one year ago and ¢517 two years ago.

okay, so let's say there are 7000 sex workers. how many are for gringos?
1/2??? 3500x $50 x 15times a week=$2.6 million a wk.. i don't think the $50 or the 15 times is too much what do you think??? :P

I seriously doubt that gringos are having sexual relations with a sex worker 52,500  times a week. Until some respected research agency actually does a study any number is nothing more than a wag (wild ass guess).

Cariden;
I am not particularly knowledgable about CR, and am not fluent in espnanol, but I would have to agree with the learned Irish Drifter in that I believe your numbers are inflated. I would expect that you should divide your figures by a number greater than 8. Again, I have no specialized knowledge nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but your figures seem way too high. Just consider the hotel rooms occupied by mongering grinos (and the fact the QBF's stats are not the norm) and I think the # would be substantially less. While it would be an interesting figure, I do not not hope an actual study is conducted at it will not help our interests, IMO.

i was asking your opinions on the #s i have no idea.. just half it and was using a low figure of $50 a session(not necessarily to the girl but to the income of ?) and 3 times a day for 5 days a wk i know some superstars are much higher but some would be considerable lower what do you think??? :P :P :P
