it seems like you would have a much better chance of making a living playing online. you could make $15 an hour in bonus and rakeback playing 3-4 tables of $1-2 or 2-3 tables of $2-$4 of break even poker on a $5,000-$10,000 bankroll. and thats not considering if you are decent enough to eek out a profit playing winning poker. You could also supplement that if you can beat the live games too

if you are playing poker online, then you should almost certainly also do casino bonus whoring or sportsbook bonus whoring/sports arbitrage that are far less risky than playing poker but do require a little bit bigger of a roll. can't do it in the states anymore, but down there you can.

between playing just competent poker and sports arbitrage, you should be able to make a living. you would need reliable internets though

i met this dude a few times while staying at the nuevo johnson.

he would winter in san jose and play poker about 5 or 6 times a week at a casino where they would pay him like 20 bucks in bonus money for showing up early and playing a minimum number of hours.

he claimed he could pay his daily room and board just on the bonus money.

i don't think he ever won big or played big stakes.

just enough to winter in san jose.

I don't think it would be difficult to play poker full time here. I've played about 10 games (not a lot, but i'm pretty busy) and walked away with $300 each time at a 1/2 $50 buyin no-limit game at the colonial.

If all games in costa rica are that soft, it wouldn't take much, though you would need a good bankroll since even soft games can be lucky for the donkeys.

As poker has become more popular with the internet and more folks are turning to it to make a living, have the games gotten harder? Has the level of player increased. I remember right when Poker exploded on TV, I had buddies that were making a killing living off of poker. Guys would watch the WSOP on ESPN, hop on the internet and just give their money away. Have those days passed?

Not at all, there are still plenty of people online who can't play for their lives. They're mostly a bunch of chasers, and they all have the same betting patterns. Occasionally, they get lucky (but it's a game of chance so it happens), but usually they leave their money at the table.

I'm killing lately in the sit-n-go's. (1 table NL tourney's) I can make the top 5 in my sleep, then the game gets better.

Orange,

Are you finding these soft games just in NL, or are they there in limit as well?

Limit is a tough game, by it's very nature it encourages people to call down to the river, because they can't easily be bluffed off a pot. This makes it harder to bluff or protect a primo hand and makes it more likely that chasers will call to the river.

In a NL game, if someone chases, you can make it very expensive for them to do so, and against one stupid player you have very good odds. But if 7 people see the river and 5 are chasing something, someone is bound to win that doesn't have the best hand going into it.

Even AA is a dog to a large field.

I lived in san jose for 3 years from 04 to 07, my only source of income was playing online poker. Back then the only live game that was going on semi consistently was at the radisson, i rarely played there and really doubt anyone can make a decent living playing live in san jose the stakes are too small and rake and tips take a huge chunk out of your profit.

Sorry guy, your wrong about that one. I personally know at least three guys that live here solely on live poker winnings. And if my brief time in the Clarion Casino the other night was a normal game, I wouldn't consider some of the large pots I saw as small stakes. Heck, I can live a month down here on less than some of those pots

Well then im probably out of the loop as far as live games in CR, there never was a consistent game going higher than 1-2 nl from what i ever saw, occasionally a 5-10 game would pop up but as soon as the 1 fish would bust out the game would break.
