Im looking for a place to rent a car with a cash deposit (not with a credit card). Ive been doing some research on the net but everybody seems to ask for this.

Thanks

Most of the established car rental agencies are going to insist on a major credit card. They will place a $1500 to $2000. hold on that card. When you return the car they will inspect it very closely and try to charge you for every nick and scratch. I doubt they would accept a cash deposit and if they do you are going to be at their mercy trying to get it all back.

There have been some posts, sorry forget exactly when, here about an independent guy, name Steve comes to mind, who might go for that kind of deal. Maybe someone remembers the details or you can find it in a search.

Its cheaper and safer just to rent a chauffer with his own wheels...gas included. Especially if you dont have a credit card.

My last 4 trips, I have gotten a car from Andy. He is a gringo, origionally from California. He lives in Santa Ana (near Escazu). His are decent used cars for $120 to $160 per week. He takes $300 cash deposit plus the rent in advance. I have had no problems and he has treated me well. Phone from US is 011-506-282-7013. He advertises every week in The Tico Times.

I just ran across this ad on a Yahoo group. They do not mention that you need anything but..." We need to see your passport (your visa must not be older than 90 days when you return the car) and your valid drivers license." No mention of a CC. Check them out for more info.

"Daihatsu Terios 4x4 with mandatory insurance, additional drivers, roof
rack and map for $259 a week!

I rented a motorcycle from Wild-Rider last October. They are very helpful, but they did require a credit card deposit.

When I rented a car from them I had a credit card, but a friend of mine managed to rent a one with a cash deposit. He told me they usually don't do it but make exceptions.

From
http://www.wild-rider.com/EN_4x4CarRental.asp:

Weekly Rates 2008 Daihatsu Terios Safety Dep. Suzuki Samurai Safety Dep.
January - April US$320 / week US$900 US$290 / week US$700
May - June SPECIAL OFFER US$259 / week US$900 US$239 / week US$700
July SPECIAL OFFER US$279 / week US$900 US$259 / week US$700
August - September US$320 / week US$900 US$290 / week US$700
October - November US$295 / week US$900 US$265 / week US$700

With $13/day extra for full coverage insurance, a weekly rental is going to run you ~$1400 not including petrol/diesel. You'll get $900 of that back (cash deposit), if the vehicle is in 'same' shape.

For me, $500 for a 7 day luxury of having my own transportatino would be nice if I could justify it.

I can't.

Why is the rental going to run $1400?

As far as I understand it the rental for July $279. If you want full cover it is $91 extra for the week.

So 1 week rental is $279 or $ 370 with full insurance which is not mandatory!
