Post subject:  Good Neighborhoods In and Around San Jose

Hi guys,

I am wondering what neighborhoods you think are good one's to live in around the greater San Jose area. I always hear about Escazu from gringos and Alejeula from Ticos. What other good neighborhood/suburbs are out there. How is San Pedro, or Heredia, or Cartago? What are the pluses and minuses of these neighborhoods and how did you decide on where you were going to live?

I like Puriscal in the mountains, 40 minutes from SJ.

To make Puriscal from the gulch in under an hour you would have to have absolutely no traffic and Mario Andretti as your chofer

I think he is looking for something more like 20 to 30 minutes from the gulch.

Irish, you are right. I was forgetting that speed on the mountain switchbacks is determined mostly by the slowest Mack Truck in front of you. I went to Puriscal last week by bus from Coca Cola in an hour and was thinking I could beat that time in a car.

If I was really looking to move there, I might seek neighborhoods witin 30 minutes of as I age, Clinica Biblia or the other big hospital as my ground zero range. Access to emergency medical care becomes more important as we age.

Los Yoses has some very nice houses. There are several embassies there. Bario Dent, north of Yoses, is also nice.

I like the Belen - Cariari area. It's close to the Autopista, the Airport and Santa Ana Road (shops, bars, etc.) is close by. The only difficulty is getting to CIMA - MultiPlaza area during rush hour.

Oh, another plus for the Los Yoses/Dent areas is that it's only a mile or so from the gulch.

I have always liked the area in curridabat near the plaza del sol, sabanilla, coronado, the area between curridabat and tres rios(along the old road) and of course santa domingo. All these areas are fairly close to downtown with relatively few gringos. The views from coronado and santa domingo are outstanding. The east side is a little cooler with fresh winds coming down from the volcano.

Escazu and santa ana are too expensive, too hot , too filled with english speaking gringos and the traffic is the worst I have ever seen.
