My friend - the list of guys that would like to invest in a CR business (that would give them a decent return) is long and distinguished. And these are guys with the financial means as well as the business minds to do it.

Owning and / or running a business, no matter what industry you're in, is not easy in a foreign country. And the odds of success go down even more if you're trying to build a successful business in one country - while living in another country.

Buying/Owning a business in CR??? It's not something for the faint of heart. :!:

Forget it :!: An absentee gringo owner would be picked clean faster than a 10lb turkey at a Thanksgiving dinner of 40 people.

Sorry to be blunt but in my opinion:

Just asking those questions shows you are far from ready to own a business in CR.

don't be sorry, i appreciate the candor. I suspected it would be more than a challenge to say the least. I owned businesses in South Florida and that was shady enough to last me for a long long time. I have the disposable income to invest but i think i am going to shift toward real estate. thanks again for your responses

Now IMO - that's a much better and practical choice. It's certainly a buyer's market in many areas throughout the U.S. But regardless... good luck in whatever you decide to do.

For me real estate would be my #1 CR investment choice but there's many stories of unforseen legal problems, shady lawyers & developers, squatters, the general risk of being screwed over by everyone you come in contact with and other things you'd never dream of happening to you in the states. In spite of all that I have seen some great deals on property in CR and know a few people that have been successful with it. Not being able to be there frequently or full time made the opportunities too risky and possibly more of a headache than it would be worth for me, especially with the bargains to be had in the U.S.A. right now. YMMV.

maybe your business's in the states seem to run better when you not there? Does that answer your question?

Just like any other country or organization, it is who you know! Costa Rica has a long tradition of “getting things done based on relationships.” As a conjunctive note, things also get UN-done or NOT done based on relationships. For example, casinos are going to have to limit their hours; the Del Rey was denied a building permit to link the hotel with the Key Largo property via an overhead pedestrian bridge.

Some would say those decisions are not good for the people:

- It is estimated that 3,000 jobs will be lost in the casino industry.

- Certainly, this country believes in pedestrian bridges because they dot the country. They are safer and help expedite traffic.

So why no bridge? Why irrational gaming policy?

No relationships or if they do have relationships, they are sour.

The magic scissors for cutting red tape - knowing the right person.

That's a another topic all together, but what's the deal in San Jose with the locals? Would a gringo have a lot of problems opening doors in the middle of San Jose, and under cutting the existing MP's? Is there an underground kinda red tape there?

I believe my comment is right on target. The message is: if you want to do business in Costa Rica, particularly a business which needs a lot of permits and permission such as an MP or casino, you have know someone. Government officials will flex their muscles when they believe they are being disrespected. Disrespect means not showing the proper deference which includes what one might loosely call an honorarium.

Opening a Chicago style Italian Beef joint would stand a better chance of success and that's not saying much. I've thought about it, mostly when I'm trashed and eating one in Sarasota.

Mr. Florida,

Would you confirm the official days range near the end of October to celebrate in Costa Rica? I will book my flight & make plans accordingly.

I believe the hotels, bars, and clubs in CR are waiting for your decree this year to schedule happy hours, special parties, BBQ's, Fishing Trips, Chica Staffing, Scheduling beer, wine, and spirits delivery, Menu planning, etc.

Thank you kind Sir,

Elroy

first of all, the ad is for a property way, way out of town.

it is not smack dab in the middle of the gulch.

my advice is to look for real estate bordering or in the red zone, near the central market area.

that is where much of the expansion of the tourist development in san jose will go, in my opinion.
