If you've only made short trips down here, follow BK's advice and rent for six months. Generally six months gets one through the cultural adjustment process. IF you like to live simply, this is a good place. What some see as a dirty, polluted, noisy, crass, and poorly developed downtown San Jose others such as Manhattan investment bankers see as SoHo in the 80's, with a tremendous energy not seen elsewhere. I'm living in it and didn't realize that is what I liked about living downtown.
I live here because I am accustomed to living with Ticos, don't have all the little Nanny's hounding me like in the US, and see in Ticos what Americans used to be. I make my mistakes (like thinking Santa Barbara was between Santo Domingo and Heredia), but I take it in stride and cruise on through.
In the US, you deal with stress. In Costa Rica, you deal with frustration. But things get done here.
