Can someone please give me an idea of where Mercado Central is? Sorry but I'm clueless as to where that is. If I tell a taxi driver " Por favor lleveme a el Mercado Central" will that do the trick? Is it well known enough so that taxi drivers know where it is?

Mercado central covers a whole square block between avenidas central and 1 and between calle 6 and 8. If you are downtown it is an easy walk no need for a cab but should you take a cab every driver will know where it is.

Several people have said go to the feria near where you live. I agree. If nothing else, it is kind of fun.

Ask some of the locals, they will know when and where; and ferias are everywhere on the weekend. I like the one in Guadalupe the best.

If you take the bus to the local feria you can find a private car which will take you home so you don't have to lug you groceries on the bus. Ask them to give you a price before you get in the car.

Everyone has their own sack -- a plastic coated gunny sack - in which they carry their goods. You can buy them at the feria. There are also temporary sodas where you can have a typical Costa Rican breakfast.

It is usually a lot less expensive than the regular market. Take lots of small bills: 1000 and 2000 denominations.

Thanks. If I can ever figure out the bus system here I'll start using the buses more. The only one I use now is the one that goes Mall San Pedro - San Jose since it's simple.

Gonna try the Zapote feria first, then the Guadalupe next.

The Guadalupe busses leave from the area of Ave 3 between Calle 1 and 3 near the Auto Mercado, south of the Parque Morazon. Ask one of the bus drivers which bus goes nearest to the Feria. When the bus leaves you off, you will have to walk about three blocks to get to the Guadalupe Feria. It is on Saturday.

The Zapote Feria is on Sunday. It is just south of the Registro Nacional; it is west of Price Smart.

This link may be old (the Tel#s are only 7 digits) but maybe of some help:
Schedule: http://costa-rica-guide.com/travel/inde ... San%20Jose
downtown map: http://costa-rica-guide.com/travel/inde ... mitstart=1
Perhaps this is more useful though more bare-bones: http://thebusschedule.com/cr/index.php

Happy shopping.

Thanks! I shop at that automercado sometimes, so i have seen many buses around there that say Moravia and Guadalupe. So I will just backtrack to where they are leaving from and ask the driver if they go to the Guadalupe feria agricultor.

I went to Mercado Central in San Jose yesterday. Score!!! Lots of fish and meat stores with prices far lower than the supermercados, and lots more choices!! Plus I found some really freaking hot peppers (I would guess they are the scary cousins of the habanero), I found some limon acido which look a lot like lemons to me. Plus I found spice shops which sell lots of different spicies I couldn't find anywhere else!

I will definitely be hitting Mercado Central once a week from now on. I'll be paying out the ass at Automercado a lot less from now on.

Automercado caters to upper class Ticos and gringos. They have more U.S. products then any other super market but also have higher prices than other super markets.
