You spend all day running around with some unlicensed (not that that means much mind you....) dweeb; the price on everthing is pretty much all jacked up due to the fact you're from the USA; people is right proud of what they got and the price they will sell to 3rd cousin on Papi's side is NOT the price which will be quoted to you (NO SALE is better than a LOW SALE, right?

)
Instability throughout the aged infrastructure (what there is of one) is both a good thing and a bad thing....but in the short run (10 years???), it's going to cost YOU the property owner.
Best factor in the purchase of security services and a % of your monthly budget for repairs to break-ins and attempted break ins, blah, blah, blah.
Rent, rent, rent. Penetrate the infra-structure; deal with locals; learn, learn, learn and PERHAPS THEN it might be time to even consider purchase. It is not a cake walk.
Oh....whatever you do...don't buy on or near the beach.....buy as high up as you can get...as in in the mountains.....

The bottom line in my view is now is NO TIME WHATSOEVER to buy anything in CR except....well....we all know the answer to that one.....
Brother Steven, care to elaborate.......? Is there a pending revolution and subsequent gringo purge you would like to clue us in on?
This might actually be the ideal time to buy. Costa Rica is now being touted as the happiest place on earth, blah blah blah, plus the fact that real estate is in the toilet. There may be some great buying opportunities. Its like the stock market...its time to buy when everyone one else is selling.
