has any resident member or visitor been hit with any of the the traffic tickets at the new, in my opinion, insanely high levels?

and how would a typical tico driver ever be able to pay these crazy high tickets?

I mean, c'mon, 500 dollars for a seatbelt violation?

I haven't heard of anybody being hit with a ticket and having to pay the new fine amounts. I have heard of bribes being paid. What tourist in his right mind would pay a $500 fine instead of a $50 bribe (mas o menos). And what cop earning $500 a month won't take a $50 bribe? The dishonest cops just have more leverage now. What honest cops there are will probably let you off with a warning for a seat belt violation.

There are a number of new laws, such as not blocking intersections, that I have not yet seen enforced, and the drivers are driving just as badly and crazily as before. Who was that Viking king who commanded the tide to go backward? How'd that work out for him?

That was King Canute (or Chanute) of England and that story is misunderstood--the King knew he couldn't command the ocean and was trying to show the sycophants and suck-ups around him that there were limits on his power. Next time: JazzboCR explains the real deal with King Midas (hint: It's a tragedy).

Good King Canute aside, if the average tico makes 500 a month, how can a ticket for a seatbelt violation be set at 500 dollars?

that would be akin to similar tickets here being priced at a month's salary/wages.....

how did these crazy ticket levels get so high?.....

I got one for parking in the Yellow zone, Everybody in town has parked there forever!!
The officer was in the process of taking my plates but said he would do me a favor since I did not know the laws..
Wrote me for obstructing traffic to the tune of 117,000 Colonies...
Also noted more parking tickets being written in San Jose..
There ya go!!

so, a parking ticket can be over 200 dollars or about two weeks pay for an average tico.....

I can't understand how these levels/ticket prices reached so high?

Same way insane laws get passed in any democracy. Politicians who live in an isolated world knowing they will not be inconvenienced by the laws they pass and lose touch with reality. Does anyone seriously believe a transito would really issue a summons to one of the legislators who wrote and passed the law?

ok, then what is the infamous 'word on the street', in the opinion of our resident members, of these ruinous fines?

what are the ticos saying?

I just can't see the public putting up with such ticket prices.

The most visible effect was Ticos jamming the drivers license bureau to about 250% capacity to renew there expired licenses. They never worried about that before because the fine, if they go caught, was so small it was not worth the trouble to renew their license.

Now it is reported that the wait to take the drivers licensing exam is more then two months. Ticos again never bothered getting a license because the penalty for not having one was so small it did not make sense, to them, to get a license.

This week Salsa IV (the constitutional court) ruled that the car seat law also applies to taxis. It was written that taxis were exempt. The law states that the car seat must be appropriate for the weight and age of all Ch*ldren up to 12 years old. This means that a taxi would have to carry 2 or 3 different size car seats to comply. The taxi drivers plan to appeal as they say there is no room in the cab trunk for that many car seats. The other problem they point out is suppose it is a mother and 3 Ch*ldren and the Ch*ldren all require the same size car seat. How can they handle that?

Other then that have not really heard any feedback from Ticos.

If I were a taxi driver, god forbid, I would just stop picking up anybody with K*ds under 12.

They can not do that. That was the main point of the Salsa IV ruling. The complaint was made by a women who was refused transportation by four taxistas because they said they were afraid of being ticketed for not having the K*ds in a restraint seat even though they were supposedly exempt from that requirement. She missed her medical appoint at the CAJA which as many know takes months to get so she filed the court action.

When it becomes time to pay your yearly marchamo in December the unpaid ticket will pop up. You can not renew until you pay it. If you should fail to pay then you will not get a sticker for your windshield and you become easy prey for the transitos to pull you over and impound your car. Should you get by with that for awhile then it will eventually come to the month when you must take your vehicle to retive for safety inspection. You will not be able to do that because you lack a marchmo so now you are missing another windshield sticker doubling your chances of being pulled over and having your car impounded and of course rack up additional $500. + fines for each violation.

Should be so unfortunate to pulled over for a traffic violation the tickets for the violation, no marchamo and no retieve will most likely total the loss of all 50 points you start with causing your license to be suspended for 2 years. The fines will total about $1800.00 for the 3 violations.

well, I just don't see how the average tico can pay these ruinous ticket fees.

on the other hand, here in beautiful, downtown SoFla, all the various cities are getting ready to install red light/speed cameras all over the place....the ticket fees for some of those violations will run from over a hundred dollars on up.

a bargain when compared to CR tickets costing a month's wages (or more) for the average tico...
