Check the average taxes due for the car you want to bring down.
http://www.hacienda.go.cr/autohacienda/autovalor.aspxI checked for older Jeeps and my reatta and citations, RVs etc...many older vehicles are 5-1100... which wouldn't be bad on a good condition older vehicle....and perfect if you can fix it yourself....
70's rust free 4x4 jeep Wagoneer with a 6 cyl would be perfect.
Here are the taxes for a 1986 wagoneer 4x2
1979 Valor Hacienda 600,000 Valor Importación 276,000
Valor Importación s/Decreto Nº 33096-H-MINAE-MOPT 276,000
Looks to me to be about $550 (but I don't read Spanish)

The above website is useful, but get confirmation by boots on the ground. I used essentially a paralegal 5 years ago to get the values directly and had no variations in valuation, and essentially a happy client. However, I'm out of the car import business. You can do it yourself, but need to be here to meet the car in Limon.
btw...a personal services guy in the gulch related a story last year about helping a gringo who imported a Range Rover and had a Guanacastecan pick up the vehicle. Whoever picks up the vehicle has rights to ownership, so the Tico is a proud owner of it while the Gringo is spending a good part of his life in court to try to get it back.
The motto is, Make sure all the i's are dotted and t's crossed, and still expect the unexpected. Do a google search and a search of the ARCR, Yahoo CostaRicaLiving & CentralValleyLiving forums, make a list of all the websites that offer the import services and then post inquiries on the forums for info from those who have used their services.
Ok off my soapbox. Here is an incomplete list of costs of import and operation in CR
Shipping/Paperwork Fees: $500 -$800
Import Paperwork Fees in CR: ???

Environmental Inspection:
Pickup Fees:
Marchamos & Insurance:
Plus, body and mechanic work is so much cheaper here, but parts prices vary considerably, with Toyota and Nissan parts being cheaper and more plentiful. One friend purchased a 1998 Dodge Intrepid, and my normally reliable and knowledgeable body guy could not give him an estimate of value as there are not many (maybe one) in country. But parts and paint were found.
