Thanks ID you almost nearly cleared up everything for me on this issue?

I guess I keep on shopping at Mas x Menos for the time being. Its not like im there in CR shopping all da time. Just buying a weeks worth of food stock during my short visits.

How much do I (did I) think I could really save?

The prospect of saving 13 % sure sounded nice though?

So lemme get this scraight.

I can just go to the same dam Mas x Menos store which is actually run by Wal Mart, and I should be really saving about 13 % on my purchases compared to Tico stores?

That's quite a stretch in reasoning based on what was posted.

Quote:
They compared prices on many items that Ticos would buy. Rice, beans, coffee... The bottom line, the Wal-Mart owned stores were usually cheaper. Pali, Mas x Menos, Hipermas, et al. The difference was as much as 13%.

If by Tico stores they were referring to pulperias there is nothing surprising in that. Pulperias are like any neighborhood convenience store in cities in the U.S. in that there prices are higher then supermarkets.

OK I did read it for myself and found nothing that would support the statement

Pali and Hipermas, Mas x Menos is not mentioned, might be cheaper on many articles but you are not going to lower your cost by 13% doing all your grocery shopping there. To go even further they single out 2 Pali stores and 1 Hipermas which leads to the possiblity that there are price differences among individual stores of the same chain. Generally anyone who lives here understands Pali has some of the cheapest prices but also has the least variety.

That was the point I was making I did not nor intend to state that the article was incorrect. What was a bit off base was the assumption of 13% overall saving simply by doing all your shopping at Mas x Menos.

Hmmm, I don't recall that anyone stated that Mas X Manos was 13% less than other stores. As the article states, during the gove. study they found a difference of as much as 13% from the cheapest to most expensive stores.

I made the point that the cheapest stores that they found (Pali & HiperMas) are part of the WalMart corp:

HiperMas
MaxiBodega
Mas X Menos
Pali

are all now part of WalMart.
