Don't think this little bit of flim-flam is confined to CR--the on-ramp to the AC Expressway just raised the toll to 40 cents and who carries the dime and the nickle readily available? It's an automated toll-collection so they get an extra dime every time (at least from me) or a 100% raise while still piously claiming only a small bump. A big thing?--no, but a thing nevertheless.

Oh yeah that's available Brother ID but I'm more of an occasional user, not a daily commuter. Mine was just a punk rant.

Is the autopista open now for traffic and what is the drive time? If it is not open approx. how long is the drive on the old road to Jaco? I did a search and 90 pages came up, to much to search to find the answer. I've actually been on this drive several times and it seems to vary widely, 1.5 to 3 hours?? I lived in Monterrey for over two years and had a bass boat to go fishing occasionally and we had to drive 100 km to get to the lake. Complete toll for boat and car round trip was approx. $55 USD!!! The only other option was taking the free highway that even a jackass would balk at traveling on. Thanks for any info..

Actually John, they should have made it 298. Of course, YMMV, but that's just my .02 cents worth....

Well, I'm a bean counter. My opionion regarding the 310 toll is the flux in monitary rates. The Spanish company is most likely basing upon Euros or Dollars. The bean counters calculate the number of tolls to get what they need for a return and then base the fee on that. The whole world should be run by accountants. Get the attornies out and put accountants in.

Lane 1: Sexy cigarette type girl selling smokes, drinks & candy for 200 colonies toll. Extras cost extra. Could even have a litte coffeeshop off to the side with parking and hotties. They validate your toll if you buy enough and you just enter highway like VIP at far end of parking lot.

Lane 2: Regular toll 310c

Lane 3: Prettyboy collector for the ladies selling tampax and diapers toll 200c

1 year later phase out the one or two lanes that dont get enough traffic.

Today's toll news:

Quote:
Escazú Tolls More Expensive Today

Beginning today the cost of the tolls for automobiles and motorcycles at the Escazú toll station on the San José - Caldera highway increases by ¢10 colones.

The tolls today is ¢320 and not the ¢310 drivers have to pay since the beginning of the toll charges three months ago.

The increase is based on the right by Autopistas del Sol, the concession holder for the highway, to adjust toll prices every three months.

Toll charges for heavy vehicles and buses stay the same.

Taxi passengers will have to pay autopista tolls, price regulating agency orders
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Taxi drivers got a break Wednesday when the price regulating agency announced that passengers have to pay tolls.

The issue never really came up when highway tolls were about 100 colons.

Now the concessionaire for the Autopista del Sol, the
former Autopista Próspero Fernández, is collecting 310 colons at two plazas. That is about 52 U.S. cents each.

The Authoridad Reguladora de Servicios Públicos said that the passenger should pay in addition to the regular fare because it is the passenger who decides which route to take. That payment of the toll is only when the passenger is aboard the taxi, the Authoridad noted. In other words, a taxi driver cannot collect for a return trip when the vehicle is empty.

This new toll set up has made trying to get around Escazu a nightmare. These Ticos don't want to pay the toll and get off the highway so as to avoid the toll and create a log jam of traffic from Hipermas near Tony Roma's all the way through town, past the Paco plaza and on to the north rejoining the pista.

TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE: they've raised the toll for cars to 320 colones. Went through there today! UN-frickin believable!

I think the bus systems in 2nd and 3rd countries are far superior to those of the U.S. in most areas. CR bus system and taxi system is great in the urban zone and in the rural areas too.

I must say, when I lived in Miami the public trans system was great too.
