I think we can all go back and forth on this topic all-day long. Bottom line is that there are a few smart players out there that do make good money playing sports or should I say wagering for a living.

FOR THE RECORD Casinos in Vegas are built on overall gamblers slots and table games, not sportsbooks actually most books only hold about 2 to 2.5 % they really dont do as well as they use to.

On-line site such as pinnacle have made books hard pressed for numbers as most SHARP Bettors have know taken there wagering off-line, I did and I live in vegas Casino odds suck most of the time.

Will you become a multi millionare off wagering highly unlikely unless yur bankroll to begin with is a half a million plus however you can grind out Nice profits over the LONG RUN IE: A full year of beeting with proper money mangement For sure one can.

Money Mangement and STRICT Displine are the Keys...........

Like as been said, you can claim anything and you sound just like the pay sites, funded by gambling sites. Everyone has a gimic and strategy. They need to instill and maintain faith so suckers like you will continue to play. What`s hard is to prove that you win in the long run. Best way would be to have an independant montoring service keep track of the picks, odds, wins and loses over an extended period like a year or few years. I`ve never seen such proof. Also, can you prove that sportsbooks make minimal profits? Calvin Ayre seems to be doing rather well. Again, anyone can come her pontificating with 5 paragraph posts. The defensiveness is rather telling though. Seems the same would prefer to invest their time on "strategies to win" rather than attempting to overturn the many who wisely see sports gambling as a waste of labor and resources. And assuming there are a few oddballs around the beat the books year after year without getting banned, who cares? I`ve never seen proof of this, just talk, but even still there are better and safer avenues to take to make some cash.

The sportsbook really does have a very small hold on all of the money that goes in and out of the sportsbook. If its a place like bodog with 10% juice, they probably keep hold about 5-6% of the money. If you have a discount lines place like pinnacle, about 2% hold.

Now, These are big places so they probably get about $85 millions of action in a year. so you are still making about $5 million a year minus about 1.5 millions to pay for your staff, facilities, and whatever else, you are still holding a nice chunk of change at the end of the year.

Of course, small books are books that just started are a totally different thing.

You have to keep in mind If you pick 10 games most people on the average will have a more or less even shots of winning an even amount of games.

Winning 8 out of 10 games, its pretty hard to do but losing 8 out of 10 games is also pretty hard to do.

Reason people lose is no because they just lose all of the time. People win and then lose and then win and then lose. In the long run though, the pattern won´t hold and you dont have enough capital to keep betting so you cant make your money back.

Big sportsbooks are like banks. As someone pointed out before, they just manage the money to their advantage meaning that they know that its impossible for everyone to withdraw all of their money at once. So they use the player´s money and do whataver they want with it keeping enough money on hand every month to pay out their players.

If all of the players decided to take out all of their money at once like in the savings and loans problems back in the days then the sportsbook would collapse.

You are right though, they are better ways to make cash but to each his own.

And by the way, Calvin´s whole empire is on the verge of collapse if you haven´t heard. advertisers are dropping him, he is laying off 100s of people, his playes have not been getting paid and his non betting ventures have been running at a loss.

and the whole Forbes article, well, lets just say that Forbe didnt do a very good job getting the facts about him. Especially since he is the one that contacted them.

With all due respect these lengthy essays from the monger board, gambling industry "in the know" crowd are starting to get boring. The pitch sounds the same as the pay sites that lure in fools, link them to online books and take a cut on their loses....

As to Calvin Ayre, last I "heard" he is working on his second billion and spends $200,000 on his vacations, one of which was recently showcased on "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous." I seriously doubt the guy is going to be hurting any time soon...

Express321. It sounds like you got burned real bad by some sportsbook and are really bitter so no point in arguing with you or replying anymore to this thread since you are an expert in the gambling business.

By the way, I thougt that Lifestyle of the Rich and Famous tv show ended back in 1995 so what are you talking about?

Here is a nice article about your boy calvin that just came out not too long ago about how well his empire is doing http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/news/business/story.html?id=be5d57c7-2e63-4f84-9975-a69439355dfe

and here is another one about all of the checks he has been writing bouncing and him being on the run. http://luckynumbers.kansascity.com/?q=node/207

Enjoy!

Nice imagination.... Suckers amuse me so for entertainment and the benefit of others I made jest of the thread starter`s question, like a month ago, and yesterday asked for proof of a single person who has beaten the sportsbooks over a year or few years. Would you care to offer it? Because all I see so far is long winded dissertations from mongers who assert that they know what they are talking about while expecting everyone to believe them....

Could be in error about the show title but the format was the same. He was shown on some island in Asia with two beautiful twins in tow and servants carrying them around in canopy covered chairs, etc. It was quite the vacation.

Surely Bodog has been effected by U.S. online gambling legislation but are you now of the opinion that this guy is broke? That in itself is silly but even if you can establish that, you`d still need to prove that such is a result of the unlucrative nature of sportsbooks because smart guys like you are not letting them make any money...

Hey, great source there. But now we can see the kind of sites you frequent and where you got all the bogus analysis you are selling. Great job and thanks for the confirmation. :D

Express,

There are people on this board that are in the business. They make their living in the business. They know how much money books make.

There is no doubt books make money, lots of it. But it's really a small percentage of the overall volume, and most of that money is made on people who are career losers.

Remember, smart money is actually insurance. That's why books let sharp players play, because even -300 favorites can lose.

Mad German,

You pontificate plenty but prove nothing. In fact I`ve yet to see anyone prove that there is any such thing as a career winner in sportsbetting. Though no doubt there are some getting by claiming they are, selling picks, running websites with advice, advertising and getting kickbacks on their subscribers loses, etc. When you can come up with that proof let me know. In the meantime, those seeking sheer entertainment may prefer the website so linked to in the post above me....

P.S. Calvin Ayre built a billion dollar industry from 10 grand and I`d like to see what % involved sports betting. I suspect it was substantial, but would sure like to see more evidence on the matter than your expert testimony....

Please, stop holding Calvin in such high esteem. Many people know his real story, it's nowhere near as lofty as you think it is. Just as one example, that 10,000 claim is bogus. He had financial backing. Yes, he started with 10,000 but he was going nowhere until he got the backing.

As for "proof", you're asking for something nobody will willingly give, even if it's true. Claiming it's not true because nobody will give it to you is like saying "Nobody gets away with crime because nobody will prove that they have".

I'll also give you a bit of advice, anyone that's 'selling' their picks is doing so because they can't make money gambling with them. So don't hold that BS out there either. A real professional doesn't want anyone to know his picks, because as soon as the public finds out about them, they screw the up the odds so bad they can't profit from them.

I'm not pontificating. I'm not bragging. I'm just trying to tell you that your view of sports gambling, while largely true, is not completely valid. And no, i'm not going to "prove" anything to you, nor will anyone else.

Live with it.

mad german ...as a gambler ,as a rule when people talk or write about gambling (mostly sportbetting) they dont have a clue what they are talking about ...you are not part of that group...in fact i look for your posts as you "Get it"....as i get older and my job demands more and more of my time, i think less about games and spreads, there was a time in my life that all i cared about was getting action , didnt matter what sport ....but when a guy like me dosnt bet anymore ...i wonder who still dose ? i see less and less sportbetters ...yes sure week 1 thur 6 all the fav. fredies are playing but by week 7 they are tapped out or only making 20 parlays ....about a month ago i had a itch,,i tried to send 300 to bodog and after 5 mins ....i get a email saying my bank is locking up my credit card as they think someone has taken my card and is up to no good....i was pissed ...after 20 mins of bull shit questions they turn my card back on..it was a major pain in the ass...so to sum it up....besides putting in some plays at sportmens or in 10 days in sosua ....i am done with sportbetting ....

I did not even run into many sportsbooks but I cannot say I was looking.

Given the nature of online betting, it's easy to make a living gambling on sports anywhere now though, so if you are doing it in Vegas, I don't see why you could not.

Just like betting ponies, it's about watching every single line but RARELY betting a game. The people I have seen who really work it bet a few games a week big and that's it, they are not these high-signing idiots who put something on every line.

I used to make out well betting mid majors in NCAA basketball but I really don't feel like I have the same knowledge and I also think the oddsmakers have stopped overlooking that action the way they once did.
