What is the firearm situation like in CR?

Are there CCW Permits for handguns and what about the requirements for rifles and shotguns also?

Is Costa Rica very strict on carrying a firearm and are they readily available or not?

Can one firearm or a collection be imported when moving?

Suggest you forget about firearms in Costa Rica........could very well be a ticket to death or prison.

Carry permits can only be obtained by legal residents.

Foreigners who have a Costa Rican corporation can get a licensed firearm to have in their home. Can not be carried or kept in your car.

Permits are granted after physiological evaluation by a professional psychologist, a written exam and demonstration of proficiency with a weapon on a firing range.

The tests are not hard particularly if you have some experience and confidence in handling a weapon. Learning how to navigate the red tape is far more complicated than the written, psychological and practical tests.

There is an omnibus crime bill in the Assembly which is being held in abeyance until all of the CAFTA legislation has been settled and passed.

Few things will change in the new criminal law, in other words, after the omnibus crime bill passes it will still NOT be against the law to break the law. But the Assembly will probably put more restrictions on gun ownership – read that as restrictions on the caliber of weapons and size of magazines.

Yes, I have noticed that Irish Drifter is always spot on and very informative in his replies.

And thank you for sound advice too.

I grew up in Texas and have been around guns from the age of 6, hunting, target shooting, competing, etc and have had some really great collections in the past. I also perfer to have access to one to protect home and family and know how to use most any firearm as I have owned and used most ALL of them out there.

From your reply, I will keep the crime bill in mind and possibly look into finding and following the outcome on any gun control bill presented. But you are right, there will probablly be more restrictions put in place if anything.

Hahaha, yea you are right. No CCW here! Although with the crime rate there should be!

Fortunatly for me this is only a pit-stop having only been here for about a year after living in New Zealand for 20 years. Even there you could own firearms and CCW permits. I am looking at moving to Costa Rica asap, hopefully within a year.

As I don't hunt animals anymore the only thing I will be hunting there will be ticas, but of course not with a firearm
