Another monger gets caught – SC Governor http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31522908/ns ... _politics/ COLUMBIA, S.C. - After going AWOL for seven days, Gov. Mark Sanford admitted Wednesday that he'd secretly flown to Argentina to visit a woman with whom he'd been having an affair. He apologized to his wife and four sons and said he will resign as head of the Republican Governors Association. "I've let down a lot of people, that's the bottom line," the 49-year-old governor said at a news conference where he choked up as he ruminated with remarkable frankness on God's law, moral absolutes and following one's heart. His family did not attend. The woman, who lives in Argentina, has been a "dear, dear friend" for about eight years but, Sanford said, the relationship didn't become romantic until a little over a year ago. He's seen her three times since then, and his wife found out about it five months ago. He told reporters he spent "the last five days of my life crying in Argentina" and the affair is now over. Sanford, a rumored 2012 presidential candidate, refused to say whether he'll leave office. "What I did was wrong. Period," he said. Questions about Sanford's whereabouts arose early this week. For two days after reporters started asking questions, his office had said he had gone hiking on the Appalachian Trial. Cornered at the Atlanta airport by a reporter, Sanford revealed Wednesday morning that he'd gone to Argentina for a seven-day trip. When news first broke about his mysterious disappearance, first lady Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press she did not know where her husband had gone for the Father's Day weekend. Should Gov. Mark Sanford resign? Sanford's announcement came a day after another prominent Republican, Sen. John Ensign of Nevada, apologized to his GOP Senate colleagues after revealing last week that he had an affair with a campaign staffer and was resigning from the GOP leadership. Sanford, first elected governor in 2002, has more than a year remaining in his second term and is barred by state law from running again. He emerged Wednesday afternoon at a news conference and it took more than a few minutes into his address before he got to the crux of what had happened. He spoke of his love of hiking and how he used to guide trips along the Appalachian Trail — and only then tearfully apologized to his wife, his staff and his friends. Sanford chokes up "I hurt a lot of different folks," he said, occasionally choking up throughout the news conference that lasted about 20 minutes. A former three-term congressman, Sanford most recently snared headlines for his unsuccessful fight to turn aside federal stimulus cash for his state's schools. His vocal battle against the Obama administration — and libertarian, small-government leanings — won praise from conservative pundits. Ultimately, a state court order required him to take the money. Sanford was born May 28, 1960, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the eldest of four siblings. He earned a bachelor's degree in business from Furman University in 1983 and a master's of business administration from the University of Virginia in 1988. After working for a couple of years in the financial world in New York, he returned to South Carolina and said he was shaped by his summers working on the family plantation. He served in the U.S. House for three terms before honoring a term limits pledge and leaving office in 2001. In 2002, he defeated incumbent Democrat Jim Hodges by 4 percentage points to become governor and won re-election in 2006, beating Democratic state Sen. Tommy Moore. As governor, Sanford has had seemingly endless run-ins with the GOP-dominated Legislature, once bringing pigs to the House chamber to protest pork barrel spending. He also put a "spending clock" outside his office to show how quickly a proposed budget would spend state money. |

I doubt it. Apparently the relationship has been going on for quite awhile. My guess is she's in her mid to late thirties. |

Josie he did not get caught. And he was no mongerer by our standards. It was just one lady. One relationship. Does not count as mongerer! He gave himself up. He was careless and was bound to get caught sooner or later. He had no mongering skills. He was just pussywhipped and smitten by a that Argentinian latin sex kitten and could not think fast or straight. Hooked on crack he was! He should have done every thing he did except tell where, who, and when, and why. He is entitled a vacation with no one interfering in his bees wax! 50 ![]() |

When you are the Chief Executive, be it of a business, a corporation, a state, etc., or just an average working guy, you certainly are entitled to a vacation. However. as CEO you have an additional obligation that the average working guy does not have. You either have to appoint someone to act in your behalf or you have to be available to staff by letting them know where you are and how to contact you. South Carolina has a couple of nuclear plants. Suppose a terrorist or an operational error had caused a catastrophic explosion at one of them. Don't you think people should have been able to contact the Governor to get his impute on how to deal with it? |

ID, I understand your point but it does not work that way in political office. Take the President for example. If he is unavailable for any reason during a national emergency the power of office shifts to the VP. Someone will make a decision and that someone will have the authority granted by the chain of command. Not trying to defend the actions of the governor. I understand he was available by cell phone, as he said he would be. Why he decided on a hiking cover story instead of just admitting he was going to Argentina is beyond me. Regardless of his status, the State was protected by the structure of government. |

Unfortunately it is not that cut and dry. The relevant section of the 25th amendment to the Constitution. "Section 4. Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President." The VP has to notify the President pro tem of the Senate and the Speaker of the House. Seeing as they are all politicians, always concerned about the next election, and currently the President is of the same party it is not a given that they would declare the President missing very easily. Realistically it is impossible for the President to go missing and the amendment was never written with that scenario imagined. Does anyone know what provisions are in place in South Carolina? |

Pac and ID, that is all spell out on the 25th Amendment. But the problem here and where there is a problem is that nobody knew where this Phucker was. You just cannot ASSUME that because he is missing, he is incapacitated or cannot DO the duties of the governorship. In an emergency that will be valuable time wasted just to determine where he is and who is in charge. PS – Shit, Ronald Reagan was missing out of his mind the last four years in office and George W. Bush for all eight. OK…political and J/K. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I would submit that not knowing where he was would meet this requirement of the 25th amendment " the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, . Undoubtedly that would be argued in the courts but that would be after the fact. The main concern at the time would have been acting in the emergency situation not worrying about how the Supreme Court would eventually rule. |

And that was my point, ID. Some are throwing crap saying that an emergency would have left SC without a Governor. In fact, an emergency would have been dealt with by an acting Governor and the reasons for the elected Governor's absence would have been dealt with later. |

That is not as cut a dry as you make it sound. The relevant section of the South Carolina Constitution states: "(2) Whenever a majority of the Attorney General, the Secretary of State, the Comptroller General and the State Treasurer, or of such other body as the General Assembly may provide, transmits to the President Pro Tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives a written declaration that the Governor is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Lieutenant Governor shall forthwith assume the powers and duties of the office as acting Governor." |
