I have a few girls that refer to me as their Novio. I have a good relationship with these girls, but they know that I am not monogamous and I have no illusions about what they are doing.
All that means is that the word novia/novio is used incorrectly by both gringos and working girls in CR.
But if you were to ask a non-prostitute for the meaning, it would be EXACTLY the same as you would define it here in the states, no gray area on this one amigo.
Of course a non-prostitute female will say that. What would be the implication if she were to say otherwise? That does not mean that the word does not carry other meanings in other contexts
There are many words in our language that have meanings beyond the literal, exact, original meaning of the word.
Bitch is one example. The word bitch is used on this board all the time and it is never used in what you call a "correct" context of a "female dog in heat", yet we all know what everyone is talking about when it is used. I don't see any amateur linguists challenging that. Common usage has expanded the meaning of the word to include things that I suppose you could say are "incorrect".
The words Phucker and Asshole are other examples of words that take on broader meanings through common usage.
So when you say that we are using the word "Novia" incorrectly, I am not sure what you mean. Further, I am quite sure we are really not qualified to make that judgment? That said my experience is that common usage of the word Novia is broader than what you are arguing.
Linguistic arguments aside, I do agree with your assessment that a guy that thinks his Costa Rican hooker "novia" is the same as having a civilian "novia" needs to have their head examined. Regardless of what you call it, it is NOT the same thing. To be sure, civilian novias are a much bigger pain in the ass. .... LOL ....... That is pretty much the bottom line and I think we agree on that.
Also ...... kudos to Loco Mike ...... I like the "here is $5, catch a cab" line. I will for sure use that.
