Gaijin has been PC'd to mean foreigner when it really means Barbarian. And if you didn't see some seriously disturbing racism while you were over there, then you really weren't being very observant of their culture, TV, etc. Or talk with any of the Korean descendants of the WWII sex slaves they captured. Their culture has always been one of superiority over every other race. Heck, I even learned a lot of the language before and while I was there and you could sit there and say a perfect sentence in Japanese and a lot of the older folks would look at you like they might at their dog, if it suddenly started talking. I realize there are races and cultures out there where I would have an even chance of being shot or welcomed, but among the 'first world' countries, I would rank Japan at the top of true racism.

I stand by my weird little freaks comment, since I was referring to the rather large segment of their male population that keeps alive one of the largest, legalized industries of fetish porn that is illegal in almost any other first world country. L*li cartoon porn, the whole anime and hentai industry, l*lita fantasy porn, incest, scat... it's illegal in most modern countries and yet you can buy it in stores all over Japan and on the web. They even still allow minors in videos nude as long as there's no sex and the privates are pixillated but they are still highly sexualized.

I seriously beg the differ. Gaijin doesn’t mean barbarian, it originally means “outsider”. Get your facts straight. And yes, I did see racism or more like nationalism in Japan, I also see plenty of racism in the USA or other “first world” countries. Maybe you are numb to them or choose to ignore such occurrences. I thought you could barely communicate to a woman you met in Aomori. Which one is it? You spoke the language or didn’t you? Also, do you realize that Aomori (especially elders) use different dialect from central dialect? Maybe they really didn’t understand what you were saying. Or if you did speak “perfect sentence”, it is quite possible that they really were surprised that a foreigner spoke such perfect Japanese since many elders in northern Japan are isolated from direct contact with us foreigners. In my experience, I would say I could get away with a lot of things because I was a foreigner. Things that may not be acceptable to Japanese was forgiven to me because I am a foreigner. I learned that from my ex-gf after we got home. She also told me she didn’t say it in front of everyone because in their culture, it is a huge embarrassment if a woman corrects a man in front of other people.


Cartoon porn is available throughout the world. It is not unique to Japan only. And “Anime” means “cartoon” in Japan. “hentai” means “pervert”. We all know that is all over the place too. For the record, I NEVER disagreed Japanese practice some weird sexual fantacies. But who doesn't. Learn to read You probably would vote for Sarah Palin. You know, I was thinking about this thread while sitting at one of the bars in KL last night. The OP very accurately posted much of the reasoning the chicas use in this 'game' and as I was watching them work the room, I realized that they moved almost in a military formation in the pursuit of their tactical goals. Someone could probably come up with a book of tactics with diagrams that covered their most commons manouvers... Like the two chica approach from behind. they position themselves one on each side of you, one chica stroking you and the other whispering in your ear. This has the desired effect of catching you off guard and also preventing you from seeing their not so flaca asses by getting to their seats before you can scope them out

I find it weird how Japanese porn censors the private parts. Other than that, I've never noticed anything weird about it. But then again, I've never looked for the "weird" stuff.

And my dos colonies regarding Japan - its an insular, very homogenious society (very few minorities - polar opposite of the USA) - their "racism" and distrust of outsiders, as well as the fact that an american/causian could live there for years, marry a Japanese, speak the language yet never really fit in - has been well documented. It is what it is.

For a place that is very sexually tolerent (Japan) and is known for wierd (and sometimes rasist) porn - they restrict porno depecting pubic hair (not too much of an issue these days ) so go figure.

I have to support PlaneCrazy on this one. I have been told by more than one person who has visited or lived in Japan that we are called Gaijin's which is a derogatory label.

Japanese men have no problem mongering with all different races but feel that Japanese women are strictly off limits for anyone but them.

I thought I ‘d clear some stuff raised in this topic so we can get back to the more important stuff like OP’s original post I sometimes think to myself, "there must be reasons why some of those fuglies are there in DR" myself. Great list.

I am a Japanese, and a linguist in the past (yes, a cunning linguist ) so I think I am qualified than most posters when I speak about the Japanese language and/or culture. “Gaijin” is as pointed out by Suspect, means outsider or foreigner. “Gai” means outside or foreign “jin" means person. “Gaijin” is a shortened word for “Gaikokujin”. “Koku” is country in this word. So, the word “gaijin” itself cannot mean barbarian or be a derogatory. However, as with any word, it can be taken as negative connotation in certain context. Compare “foreigner” and “phucking foreigner” in English. Same thing. We just don't have a word for phuck so you have to take the context into consideration. If one is bad-mouthing a foreigner, “gaijin” can be taken as derogatory. Some people think the word “gaijin” is a bad word because we do blanket foreigners as “gaijin” and not “American”, “Canadian”, “Mexican” etc. It’s just a PC thing really. So many of us say “gaijin-san” to be more PC these days. Yea, like "miyagi-san" in Karate K*D

As for the sexual practice is concerned, I also think we have some weird stuff in Japan. Stuff I don’t even understand. But I would say that abnormalities from westerners’ point of view may not be in considered as such in Japan. From some of these comment, you may think that those weird vending machines, soapies, and sexually oriented items are on every corner like Starbucks, but it ain’t so. Possibly from people who are looking for mongering activities may spot them because they are in those districts all the time especially in Shinjuku, but I seriously doubt that you would find panty selling vending machines in country side of Japan. From Japanese point of view, Red Light District in Amsterdam displaying half-naked girls in public where anyone can see them, or in New Orleans where porn shops displaying dildos and blow-up dolls to the public can be considered “weird”. All I’m saying is that it really depends on who’s looking at who. As said in the OP's list, No.10, different strokes for different folks.
