Post subject:  Baby Babble Broken English in the CR

Didn't know where to post this so Smack Talk seemed the best fit.
Just ranting so please feel free to guff me or the Baby Babblers as you see fit!!
You want to stick out like a sore thumb & shout from the top of the Marlin Bar, "I'm a dumb ass Gringo."? Speak like this guy did!!!

In the Del Rey 2/8 in the lobby bar, I overheard a fellow monger talking to a chica at a table behind me.
His sentence verbatim, "I sorry my friend make you cry. I no make you cry!"

He was using baby babble to say, "I'm sorry my friend made you cry, I won't make you cry!"

What is up with this I don't know Spanish, so if I talk like (I'm talking to) a baby in broken English, they will understand me!???

If she understands the baby babble, she will understand you when you speak correct English. One does not assimilate into another culture by speaking slow , loud, broken English Baby Babble!

When I was in Thailand in the mid-80s (oilfield) a fellow employee would use this slow, louder than normal, broken English to pretend like he was speaking Thai. Simply idiotic in my opinion.

My point is , why not put out 5 minutes worth of effort & learn how to say 'Lo siento que mi amigo te hizo llorar! Yo no voy a hacerte llorar!'

Even if what I just typed is broken Spanish, it's a gazillion times more appropriate than cartoon broken on purpose English!! Spanish is not that hard to learn people.

So , if that is the only thing I have to ponder on today, it'll be a good day!

Thanks,
CostaReeker

Great post.

And talking talking slower or louder in a language the other party clearly doesn't know... is foolish, ignorant and borderline rude imho.

Actually, you should speak both your native language and your (soon-to-be) second language slowly, while articulating your words for the best chance at being understood. Most working chicas in CR can comprehend English, at least as addressed in their workroles. But you need to say the words slowly for them to hear it, process it, and convert it.

I find it funny when guys just rattle off their English as if talking to a native, and then just repeat the same words when the recipient doesn't understand. It takes a little common sense (and a desire to communicate) to breach the language barrier.

BD, with all due respect here I don't mind being countered or corrected, but kindly read my posts for caveats and context before doing so.

"... in a language the other party CLEARLY dosen't know..."

My point was that if they have near zero command of english slowing to a drawl will not make a difference. Yes if they show some command then slowing down is of help.

In Greece a tourist dining near me was asking for marinara sauce. She was breaking it down and shouting syllables with a pause between each. It was not going to matter. The server knew no english other than hello and items they in fact did serve - marinara was not part of the menu. I figued that out in the first 60 seconds dealing with the server. The other tourist did not and looked like a fool.

You're very sensitive, HD. I wasn't challenging you, I was expanding your statement to include BOTH English and when trying to speak a 'foreign' language. Almost all of the chicas can comprehend some English, if they've been servicing gringos for more than a few sessions. But, if someone has zero grasp of your language, then it would be pointless to try conversing.
