From today's Inside Costa Rica. "Motorcyclist receives over $3,000 in tickets from single traffic stop October 16th, 2012 – Kevin Benavidez Jimenez received over 1,500,000 colones, or more than $3,000 in traffic tickets, when stopped by a Fuerza Publica officer for a routine inspection in Acosta, San Jose on Saturday. According to the police, they asked the young man to stop for a routine paperwork check. The man, however, tried to escape. He was followed and stopped by the police, who escorted him to the police station, at which time they called in the Transit Officer in the area, Michael Soto. Upon arrival, Soto gave him 9 different tickets for various infractions. The first one was for 270,450 colones, for not carrying his circulation papers. He was also deducted 20 points from his driver’s license. As the motorcycle had its RTV/Riteve (vehicle inspection) expired, Benavidez had to pay 10,000 colons more, and lose 15 more point on his license. The officer also gave him a ticket for 72,120 colones, for not carrying any type of documents, nor registration card for the motorcycle. The next ticket was for 180,300 colones, for not having license plates, and for which 15 more points were deducted from his driver’s license. As the motorcycle was lacking its headlight, as well as mirrors, Benavides was given two more tickets, each one for 108,180 colones. He then received two more tickets, each for 108,180, for missing a break light, as well as a tachometer, infractions that also cost him 20 more points off his driver’s license. But there’s still more. Since the young man tried to flee, he received a fine for 270,450 colons, and lost another 10 points from his license. The grand total came to 1,200,000 colones. However, taxes were then added to all the tickets, adding another 360,000 colones, which brought the total up to 1,560,000 colones. “I don’t know who’s going to pay all of this, because I don’t have money, “ he said. Benavides also lost a total of 80 points from his driver’s license." (For those unfamiliar with the current point system you start with 50 and when those are gone your license is suspended. |

DonCarlos wrote: The law actually say foreigners are not allowed to return until the tickets are paid. We can still leave. There was an article in one of the media a short time ago that said they were tying the traffic police database into the immigration computers at both the airports and border crossing so as to prevent foreigners with unpaid tickets from leaving the country. |

Here's the article Irish Drifter referenced. Be sure to read the few comments--at least one thinks the law doesn't pass the Constitutional "smell test"; others see this as a way around the 90-day limit on "permanent tourist": http://insidecostarica.com/2012/10/11/f ... fic-fines/ |

Perhaps that's one less careless motorcycle rider in Costa Rica and one more passenger for the bus system. ![]() ![]() BTW, is it surprising the motorcyclist was not charged with alcohol or drugs, but just with being careless and foolish. My bet is that his eyes were a bit bloodshot. ![]() |
