Hey guys, I can't recall if I have asked this, and I KNOW I never asked it in this section, but I have an impending Visa Run coming up in the next few days and I keep hearing conflicting stories about the necessity to actually leave for 72 hours.....I have asked some reliable sources, but haven't actually heard from anyone with first hand experience...can someone jump in here and enlighten me a little?

Residency is going to be my #1 priority once I get this first trip behind me, help a newb out?

Thanks guys!!

This could be two questions.

1. The necessity to leave.
2. The necessity to stay gone for 72 hours.

I have always left. I cant say I have always been gone a solid 72 hours. I don't recall ever reading anyone being checked for the amount of time they have been away when re entering Costa Rica. I have heard stories and seen the passport of guys driving across the border and coming back the same day and getting a new Visa stamp for 90days.

I have never left by ground so I don't know firsthand. When re entering Costa Rica at SJO, I have been given a 90 day visa every time out of about 85-90 trips and they have never looked to see how long I was gone.

There is a company that advertises on AM Costa Rica that provides a plane ride out of and back into Costa Rica the same day for a Visa run.

more ???s ?

Thanks...good info. I'll look for that Airline for next time or something...this time we're going to just drive to the border, walk across and have lunch or something. Is there a good, safe place to park on the CR side?

I recommend the Nica border crossing at Penas Blancas for less hassle than Panama. I have used both over the years until becoming a resident.

Made the trip there and back yesterday and I have to say that Paso Canoas is NOT on my list of places to visit again....HOWEVER, we found TONS of little stands selling Rombutans along the way, and Parrita, Uvita Dominical and the like along the coast are absolutely ON my list of places to see again!

No problems at the border......

Here's more on this exotic fruit mentioned by Brother Slinky. Interesting note: native to SE Asia, it is slightly different in CR (see Para. 2): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rambutan
