Here is an interesting site that allows you compare cost of living between two cities. http://www.expatistan.com Quote: "Expatistan is a cost of living calculator that allows you to compare the cost of living between cities around the world. The comparisons allow you to get a better understanding of the cost of living of any city before you move there. What makes us unique is that we collect the prices that we use to calculate our cost of living index from visitors like you. Naturally, the more data entered, the more accurate the index and the calculations will be." As they point out the more responses they get the more accurate the data. I would add the more recent the date the more accurate it will be. May not be the most accurate figures but is probably a good indicator in general and is fun to play around with. A note of caution. If you are comparing prices to San Jose enter San Jose Costa Rica or it may default to San Jose California. |

Numbeo is also a good website for cost of living comparisons http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/comparison.jsp The COL comparison between Tampa, FL and San Jose is rather stark. In my opinion it has gotten very expensive to live in San Jose with very few services available. Costa Rica is no longer a lower cost option. Even Chicken is twice as expensive in San Jose than where I live. ![]() ![]() Also, you can discover the relative crime statistics on Numbeo between where you live and where you think you want to move. |

While I certainly agree San Jose is not an inexpensive place to live according to the website you cite Tampa is more expensive. Quote: Indexes Difference Info Consumer Prices in San Jose are 11.56% lower than in Tampa, FL Consumer Prices Including Rent in San Jose are 13.78% lower than in Tampa, FL Rent Prices in San Jose are 23.33% lower than in Tampa, FL Restaurant Prices in San Jose are 10.39% lower than in Tampa, FL Groceries Prices in San Jose are 15.98% higher than in Tampa, FL Local Purchasing Power in San Jose is 65.02% lower than in Tampa, FL Other then grocery prices San Jose is cheaper to live then Tampa according to the website. Local purchasing power is not really relevant to gringos who on the whole have a much higher income then the average tico. |
