This sordid incident has convinced me to drive the extra hour to Orlando and use JetBlue. Spirit's lack of compassion--and not just this but their whole policy--is appalling and shameless. |

The article mentions that a American Legion post in Tampa has requested legionaries to join in the boycott. This has spread quickly and even made it to Costa Rica. I was at an American Legion meeting in Escazu yesterday and this incident was spoken about and most members pledged to join the boycott. This particular post has 100+ members so if just a few choose to boycott Spirit they will have lost the $197.00 they refused to refund a couple of times over. |

It was a crappy thing and I don't particularly like Spirit either. I do have to ask: would the policy be different on other airlines? The reason I ask is that everybody I know hates some airline for a particular reason. Personally, I think they are all scumbags that generally don't go out of their ways to help their customers. |

Saw on TV yesterday where Fox news gave him the money back in cash. Veteran took the cash and said it was going be donated to the Wounded Warriors instead. O'Reilly still talking about it as well. Spirit can't buy any positive pub. |

The only reason this has gotten any attention is because the guy is terminally ill and a vet. If it were any average Joe, it would not get any air. Every airline has a policy. The guy should have gotten cleared to fly before buying a ticket, or at least discussed it with his doctor. Maybe buying insurance would have been a good idea if there were doubts about his ability to fly. I don't like Spirit, but a policy has to be enforced for everybody. It would not be fair to the other passengers if he got his refund. This guy made a huge scene at the airport for $197 and then when several companies offer to give him the money, he offers to donate it. His actions aren't consistent. Seems like once the cameras turned on, he is really playing up the good guy role. |

I agree that the airlines have all lost that customer first policy. But the prices we pay for tickets is ridiculously low compared with inflation. If we pay business fare (with inflation this is what fares should be) on a name carrier and not a discount line like Sprint you notice the difference. But the big problem in the US and now the rest of the world is we just buy the product or service with out reading about the return or guarantee policy. We think if we just bitch long enough it will get fixed. What's that expression "My Bad", that should have been his response instead of playing up I am a dieing Vet. I am and know plenty of other disabled vets that step up to the plate and have the courage to admit my fault for not knowing what I did. Just the way I see it. |

It sucks that Spirit is pushing the envelope like this.. maybe there will be a revolt... ![]() ![]() Play Spirit properly you can still get steep discounts and it is well worth it At FLL there has usually been an employee who checks the size of your bag along with your boarding pass before you get into the security line. Bins are located there where you can check to see if your bag fits within Spirit's dimensions... if they are too large you are told to go back and check or pay for your over-sized bag. I guess Spirit figures they can lay off that employee now and punish you for trying to sneak a bag on at the gate. This means of course that gate personal will have to watch more closely as people board the plane...which may mean more delays in getting on I travel with a Jansport backpack which qualifies as a "personal item" and even when jam-packed still passes the bin test. |

Srilm wrote: yes, spirit, it's a rule, but you guys (airlines) bend and waive rules all the time when it's appropriate. i like that united (and others) let military in uniforms board early. costs the airline nothing and generates goodwill. and it's a really nice perk now that those bins fill up so early. SR +1 |

I can't believe anyone even flies on Spirit. Every time I have looked for flights they have such shitty routes and times that I would never fly them, even for free. I am in Miami and want to get to CR or DR why do they make you fly to NY first..... they all suck |

Srilm wrote: Spirit could definitely use a better PR department or something because it seems like every new fee or incident makes them look as bad as possible. SR It seems as if they have perverse incentive system working--"Make us look like refried dookie one more time, Moldwick, and we'll....promote you." |

SR They are most likely sticking with their business model......If we can not charge the customers a fee for a PR department we will not have one. It is cheaper to endure a bit of bad press then to pay people to make us look like reasonable folks. ![]() ![]() |
