The Port Authority released the names and salaries of all of its employees for the first time on Friday, and they show many regular police officers at the top of the pay scale.

Paul Nunziato of the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association says high overtime numbers are the agency’s own fault. He said the union has been asking the agency to hire more officers for years.

The highest-paid policeman is a sergeant who has racked up $115,394 in overtime this year. His total pay of $265,059 is higher than that of most Port Authority executives.


Maybe my math is off but doesn't that imply that his base pay is $150.000? :shock:

I believe he is a 'special' sarge and probably is at the highest end of his pay grade due to seniority and is perhaps on some sort of program funded at least in part by the feds.

at that pay rate, he could afford a reasonably nice house in say queens but not manhattan.

the overtime would account for perhaps 1000 extra hours a year of approx 20 hours overtime each week on average.

Possible but considering the pay scale of the Port Authority questionable. A rookie patrolman makes about $32,000 base salary the first year. After 5 years on the job his base is $90,000. Given that it would seem that a sergeant making a base of $150,000 could well be a regular beat Sgt with maybe 8 to 10 year service.

yeah, some of these salaries are just out of control, not to mention the early retirement plans and cash bonuses awarded.

then, the same former employee goes to work again and funds another pension plan and expensive benefit package.

the numbers are unsustainable and are bankrupting both government and private pension plans.

it's a ponzi scheme that has to collapse sooner or later.

I was reading about one local government debating whether to extend a 'special temporary' tax on utility bills to continue funding public employee pension plans.

the 'special temporary' tax was enacted when the economy started retracting and was set to expire this year.

now, not only may it be extended, but increased in amount.

I don't see anyway out of this mess other than public bankruptcy or massive, massive cutbacks.

An Associated Press survey earlier this year found the 50 states have a combined $690 billion in unfunded pension liabilities and $418 billion in retiree health care obligations.

While I agree that cities are being bankrupted by union contracts as well as other factors that is not relevant to th NY & NJ Port Authority.

They operate and maintains infrastructure in the New York/New Jersey region’s trade and transportation network. These facilities include the airports La Guardia, JFK, Newark, etc. marine terminals and ports, the PATH rail transit system, six tunnels and bridges between New York and New Jersey, the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan. Their revenue comes from tolls, airport user fees, airline charges, port fees, bus terminal rental and user fees, etc. They do not receive any tax revenue. The current cash toll for a passenger car on their bridges or their tunnels is $12.00 :shock: of course they only collect that in one direction. :roll: :P

You couldn't get me to work as a Transit Cop in New York City for $150K. The job is dangerous, stressful, and has incredibly irregular hours, and the cost of living - especially housing, in NYC is double that of anywhere else in the country, other than Washington DC or the SF Bay Area. They earn that money, and I would not begrudge them getting it. NYC is not Mayberry or Podunk.

The reason the wage scale looks the way it does is that the $32K is a trainee wage. Once you are out of the academy and pass your probationary period (not sure if it's 3 or 6 months), you are immediately bumped up to around $58K.

We are not talking about NYPD. Port Authority police work exclusively at Port Authority facilities. While any law enforcement job has inherent dangers Port Authority police are not significantly in any more harms way then most other police officers. In fact if you accept the premise that the two most dangerous situations a law enforcement officer will face on a routine basis are routine traffic stops and domestic violence calls the average Port Authority police officer will rarely face that situation.Yes living in NYC is expensive but it is less living in area outside the city where many of the NYNJPA facilities are located. That is not to say those areas are not more expensive then "Mayberry" or "Podunk" but government employees like local police in the NY metropolitan area have pay scales on a less grand scale then the Port Authority police.

The problem is you have government employes negotiate government
employee contracts. All with no accountability or responsibility on
either side. NY and NJ is almost as bad as Chicago government. The
crooks running the show.
