Hey guys. Lets say you are going through education/training for something that interests you. The work it will lead to you find very interesting, challenging, and rewarding; the kind of stuff you spend your "personal" time reading about etc. But....the job market is saturated with people like yourself and the job security can be low. The pay can be decent, but you must jump through many hoops before you reach that stage, and it may never happen. but...you could follow a separate path which will lead you to a position you are less interested in. This option would offer significantly higher pay, more job security and, although the subject matter isn't exactly what you find yourself interested in, the things that go along with the job has a lot of things that interest you; traveling to, and spending time in, foreign countries for example. What would you go for? |

When you sell your soul to the devil for his riches today, Satan can and will change the contract on you later, and rarely will that be for the better on your side of the deal. Sort of like prepaying the first lady you talk to in DR, the sooner the deal is closed, the bigger the pre-pay is, and higher what you pay, the more the odds go up you will not be as satisfied at the out come. If you should chose the latter, then go into that with you eyes open and cover your butt big time for the deal to end at any time is my suggestion to you. The recession we are in now caught many a person with similar situations unprepared for quick and sudden reversals in life. ( and not to mention huge bills they had planned on paying some day over the rainbow ) |

This depends somewhat on your age and how long you intend to work. A man between the ages of 21-30 will often have a much different perspective than 31-40 or 41-50 or 51-60. While it might be nice to work in something you're really interested in would it really be something you want to "live"? If so then go for it. But be willing to accept all the negatives you listed above. Security and extra money do have their pluses. On the other hand you could pursue the 2nd career and continue to enjoy the 1st as a hobby or part-time interest. These decisions don't have to be for life but you do have to look down the road. Personally I've never been in what I would consider my "dream job" but I've managed make a living, survive four marriages, travel, gamble and save something for retirement. Having a flexible skill allows you to look for better situations while you're still earning and learning. Only you can really decide which direction you choose but remember you can always make a change later. Just bear in mind your "opportunity wedge" gets more narrow the older you get. Good luck. |

Take the money & do what you want on the side - as a volunteer, part time position or starting your own company. /dddick |

I have tried to do both. I will tell you. If you know how to work your money, you will be able to use the better salary in the future to do what you wanna do. When I do it again, I will take the money and run this time...... You can do what you want and try to be happy or you can make your money and make sure you are happy......Just my two cents.... Good luck with your decision Q.... the DR <------OG payin for his mistakes....... ![]() |

I do not claim to know more about life than anyone, but in light of the current economic situation in the US and much of the world I would have to suggest taking the second option. I myself did this 4 years ago, I have made a very good living and visited beautiful countries like Iraq, and Afghanistan, (joking) where I am currently working as a contractor. I have been fortunate to visit the Phillipines and Thailand on a few occasions. I lived in CR for a while but very hard to earn a living there. Also, I have been able to buy a beautiful home in FL since coming over here and have some nice toys, and all paid for as well. It is a sacrifice being over here approx. 10 months out of the year but I don't know of too many well paying jobs that enable me to read CRT and similar sites while on the clock. It does get old after a while, I celebrated my 40th birthday here in Kabul two days ago, that sucks but trying to keep my eyes on the prize, the hardest part I would say about being here is not having my dog with me, and not to mention no alcohol is allowed in the base either. Good luck on whatever you decide. |
