As I lived in the Boston area in the '80s (worked in Boston and Dorchester...Savin Hill, the Red Line, etc.), I remember Whitey quite well. He had quite the organization (the Winter Hill Gang)...Kevin Weeks, Steve 'the Rifleman' Flemmi, et. al.. Ruthless. I remember one time he had a girl killed by a screwdriver jammed into her eyes and temple. Columnist Howie Carr has written a couple of books about Whitey...must reads! Whitey even won the Massachusetts lottery one week...WTF?! His brother, Billy, was the president of the state senate, then became the head of the University of Mass. He was so corrupt himself, that Howie Carr used to refer to him as 'the corrupt midget' (he's only about 5'5" tall). I believe the movie 'The Departed' was based on Whitey. I always thought he was living in Costa Rica all these years, but as it turns out, he was in California. They found about $850,000 in cash in his apartment! Probably he's got more in other locations (Europe, etc.).
Typical Whitey...last week in court, when asked if he could afford a lawyer, he replied "I could if you give me my money back"

Indeed. Southie, Savin Hill, Fields Corner, Dot Ave...Whiteys stomping grounds. Phuck, even Roxbury and Mattapan. There are many stories not well known about Whitey. Like the one about the trap door in one of his 'houses'. Hey...it's somewhat akin to CR...if you have enough money, pretty much anythings available. The story goes that Whitey 'had' many und***ge girls in his secret basement, and paid off the parents with mucho dinero. Read Howie Carrs books for more info.
To put it mildly, many individuals in the FBI are quite concerned that Whitey will 'talk'. Hell, the guy had several FBI agents on his payroll. Many people wonder why it took so long to locate him...16 years...WTF! That's why Whitey has a lot of bargaining power now. If he talks, the FBI is going to be very embarrassed, and some people could go to jail, even though it's been 16 years. Many people think it's quite convenient that the FBI located him now. Cover your ass!! Whitey played both sides for a long time. People in high places could still go down.
I'd like to know who's going to collect the $2,000,000 reward. Yes, that's 2 million dollars! The guy was number two on the FBI's '10 most wanted list' (number one before Bin Ladin came along).
