Saw this today- for any wondering what was going to happen to them on the way down, or how to become a Hero if it does happen on your flight.

was just thinking about this on my flight home late last night. was looking at the wing thinking from seat 4a i would likely clear the jets at least. :mrgreen:
article doesn't take into account what would happen at say 15,000 feet. always sort of hoped if it did happen i could at least enjoy the ride for a little while. :lol:

I think you would probably be better off at 30,000, you'd die fast. From 15,000, you might actually hit the ground alive. Ouch! :lol:

exactly my point! what a trip that would be, i mean you're dying anyway why not have a full rush of free fall? not like you'd be laying on the ground writhing around in pain after impact, its still instant death.

I have read some stories of bomber crews members making that drop in WW2, you know the big one, and living. The Luftwaffe treated them as special POW after that :D :D

My favorite story of that is a parachute jumper chute failed to open, as he was falling he says all he could think of this was really going to hurt. After hitting the ground ( new plowed corn field, nice rich black dirt) he sat up and and said to the farmer who say him hit " I never thought hell would look like Iowa " :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Question, been a while since calculus in College, but if I remember right right, after so far up you going to hit the ground at pretty much the same speed or force no matter how high you are and the height was around 126 ft? Will some math major correct or explain better.

You will reach a maximum terminal velocity.
This is where the drag from the atmosphere prevents any further acceleration.
The actual number is variable, with the maximun velocity being somewhere near 200 mph.
I have no idea how slow you could make your self fall.
Using your clothes for drag will help.
So will a soft landing site.
Obviously an outstrecthed 'starfish' position would be slower than a vertical dive.

Check out a recent episode of Manswers (Spike TV, Awesome show with T&A) where they determined how big you would have to be a plug a window if it blew out of plane if it was up at cruising altitude and pressurized. http://www.spike.com/video-clips/ms587h ... lane-fatso
