as a K*D I grew up loving the big red machine ....one summer I went to 50 games ...cutting grass to earn money for my ticket and the bus ....I would get to the park early and stand near where the players would park, Sparky was always cool to me and a few times he would say " K*D can you tell me the starting line up" easy stuff for me .....I remember him well to this day

although i loathed the reds in the 70s i always respected sparky. you could just tell he was a good man by looking at him. and he got the most out of those teams in cincy and detroit. so long sparky.

i actually got the chance to visit riverfront before it was torn down. weird to finally sit in the place you watched your dodger dreams die as a K*D. the humidity was unreal.

I'm a little late with this but here's an appreciation of the man and his accomplishments:

To lead a team in victories as a manager is remarkable; to do it with 2 different teams is astounding.

Great article JB. The man was a class act and one of the best.
