For those somewhat baffled--the Hotel Castillo has a nice small BBQ on Sundays from 1-3 PM. Good grub, modest cost, in the semi-outdoor back bar. Pull-down screen for sports events and usually good company. A fine place to spend Sunday PM downtime. |

What are we taking in terms of Q... ? Ribs? Pork Baby Back? Chicken? Slow and Low smoked? Anyone south of the Mason-Dixon line has strong opinions towards Q. I'm from NY, and I loves me some BBQ. And I will be at the Castillo in less than 3 weeks... I guess I will find out for myself... |

If all else fails, Brother WW40, you can just enjoy the beverages...and speculate on what color thong the barmaid (Veronica, is it?) is wearing. BTW, not looking to bust anybody's cover but I have it on good authority that serious BBQ on-demand is coming soon to SJO |

Kansas City ain't south of that line and Kansas City has the best bbq in the USA be it via Gates (http://www.gatesbbq.com/default.aspx ) or Arthur Bryant's (http://www.arthurbryantsbbq.com/ ). Texas pure on SUX for q....and Memphis ain't that much better~! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Truth be told, them places were chicken shacks when they were at their finest. Up the street from each other.....deep in the inner city of KC.....still......Gates puts out a damn fried product for being a local chain.....and Bryant's has only slightly "better" beef....but their sauce is too tabasscoee for me. Castillo CAN have a nice Sunday deal....but it is pretty hit or miss as to whether it actually happens or not. *shrug* Werewolf40 wrote: What are we taking in terms of Q... ?

Brother WereWolf40 didn't say that the best BBQ was south of the Mason-Dixon line, only that they had strong opinions about it. I strongly prefer the Carolina vinegar-based BBQ. KC MO--Good Q and Basie too. BTW, a part of southern NJ is south of the line and Count Basie was from Red Bank, NJ. Funny thing,eh? |

Jazz I have no problem with you being a NJ "homer", being a Garden State native myself, but to say part of southern NJ is below the Mason-Dixon line is a bit much. The Mason-Dixon line was established to delineate the borders of Pennsylvania and Maryland which had been in dispute. It goes nowhere near New Jersey. It marks the southern border of Pennsylvania and the northern border of Maryland until it reaches Delaware where it turns south to separate the borders of Maryland and Delaware. |

OK I admit to error on this, although if you extend the bottom of the vertical line straight East, it would catch some of S. NJ., as this Wiki clearly shows. What truly led me astray was the attitudes of people in this S. NJ area--which was the 2nd largest recruiting area (after southern Indiana) of the newly resurgent KKK in the 1920's and remains, shall we say, "different". I share a fierce sense of independence with them and that's all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mason%E2%80%93Dixon_Line BTW, thanks for spurring the research. I learned among other things that Delaware remained a slave state until it was Constitutionally abolished. |

It's getting back to what I wrote about strong opinions. Steven1 dissed Texas BBQ, and SpeakNo disagreed. Steven1, I've been to Gates in KCMO, and I didn't like it. Beef Ribs are kind of nasty, in my Yankee opinion. Like that Brontosaurus Drive-In BBQ in 'The Flintstones'. I love Baby Back (Pork) Ribs, whether it is Memphis stlye, KC style, or the vinegary Carolinas style. I'm sure the chicas will be receptive when I negotiate an hour or two with sticky BBQ sauce smeared on my face and fingers... |
