When naming a sports team, moving the stadium or the whole franchise, why can't the owners come up with a name grounded in reality? Beats the freaky-deaky outta me too. Consider: a double tap on NYC..sorry Brother NYG (1) NY Yankees--The Bronx is how far from Connecticut where Yankeeland starts? Alt Name--NY GreedyBuggers (2) NY Giants--play where? and their coaches and players live where? Alt Name--NY-AREA Giants OR the Meadowlands Muckers (3) Utah Jazz--Is there a more jazzless state? Alt Name--Utah FormerPolygamists (4) LA Lakers--Yeah, right, playing in a desert Alt Name--LA Fakers SPECIAL MENTION: The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim--a hopeless grotesquerie Alt Name--SoCal SayWhats Surely you have your faves. Pile on. |

Philly has been an abbreviation for Philadelphia since Ben Franklin was the first Postmaster General, and thus by extension, all residents are Phillies. Glad to help the info-challenged. |

How about the Miami Heat? I know it's hot down here, but what in blazes is a Heat? While we're on this topic: Pau Gasol is a member of the Lakers, thus is a Laker. Lebron James is a Cavalier. What is Dwyane Wade? |

Buffalo’s team in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) in 1946 was the Bisons. In 1947 a contest was held to rename the team, which was owned by James Breuil of the Frontier Oil Company. The winning entry suggested Bills, reflecting on the famous western frontiersman, Buffalo Bill Cody. Carrying the “frontier†theme further, the winning contestant further offered that the team was being supported by Frontier Oil and was “opening a new frontier in sports in Western New York.†When Buffalo joined the new American Football League in 1960, the name of the city’s earlier pro football entry was adopted. |

The Virginia Tech Hokies, formerly known as The Turkey Gobblers: Quote: What is a Hokie? The origin of the word "Hokie" has nothing to do with a turkey. It was coined by O. M. Stull (class of 1896), who used it in a spirit yell he wrote for a competition.
Here's how that competition came to be held. Virginia Tech was founded in 1872 as a land-grant institution and was named Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. In 1896, the Virginia General Assembly officially changed the college's name to Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute, a name so long that citizens shortened it in popular usage to VPI. The original college cheer, which made reference to the original name of the institution, was no longer suitable. Thus, a contest was held to select a new spirit yell, and Stull won the $5 top prize for his cheer, now known as Old Hokie: Hoki, Hoki, Hoki, Hy. Techs, Techs, V.P.I. Sola-Rex, Sola-Rah. Polytechs - Vir-gin-ia. Rae, Ri, V.P.I. Later, the phrase "Team! Team! Team!" was added at the end, and an "e" was added to "Hoki." |
