Sorry to hear about Solomon Burke's passing. He brought something special to everything he sang. Name me another Black artist that entertained the yobs at a KKK rally, as he once did...

OK for those who need BG: his daddy Ted Broussard is in the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame so his bloodline is strong. For particulars, see Allmusic.com entry

Although he was more 'blues' than 'soul', nobody mentioned the great LONG JOHN BALDRY (RIP) :!:

He passed away in 2005. His best-known album, 'It Ain't Easy' (1971), was co-produced by Elton John and Rod Stewart. Ron Wood played lead guitar on the album.

'Don't Try To Lay No Boogie-Woogie On the King of Rock and Roll'...indeed!

Check out this video from a concert in Germany, in 1993, with Kathi McDonald and the Long John Baldry Band doing 'I'd Rather Go Blind'.
Damn...great performance! Apparently Kathi McDonald used to sing with Leon Russell's band and also in Joe Cocker's band.

How she slipped my mind I don't know but Christine Ohlman the Beehive Queen (late of SNL) is a terrific singer that put out a great album this year--The Deep End. Here's some YouTube clips of her covering 3 soul classics:

don't look now but gregg allman has recorded his first album in 14 years. if the first song off it is any indication it is going to be epic.

Here's a NYTimes interview with/review of Gregg Allman's newest solo album. And he the ABB regained their spot at the Beacon Theater too, with an apology from their management:

Let me propose 2 candidates: Huey Lewis (a more-than-adequate harp player too) and Andrew Strong
Mr. Lewis is a keeper of the flame type but has written well as well:

If you saw the movie The Commitments, that was Andrew Strong front and center. Here's more:

While trolling YouTube for David Sanborn material, I came across this early video. Why this clip is here? Check the singer--he just nails the song. However this presents a challenge--I haven't a clue as to who he is. Any Thread follower want to chime in here?

Yes of course it is. In my defense this clip was pre-AWB and he hasn't been with them for some time. Then again neither I or others have brought him up before--shameful omission.
Just for fun, check this later vid--yes, that's Macca on the drums:
