She says $24,000 Rolex gone from airport screening belt; security says, what Rolex?

Paulene Showalter, 63, of Baker County, is suing the U.S. Transportation Security Administration for losing a $24,000 Rolex her husband had saved up to buy her on her 50th birthday. The watch was lost at Norfolk International Airport in Virginia , reports the Florida Times-Union.

Security officers instructed Showalter to put her watch in a bin and place it on a conveyor belt, over her objections. She was told she had no choice if she wanted to board her flight, so eventually she complied, reports the Florida Times-Union.

When she was put through an additional security check, she again asked to be allowed to retrieve her watch first. Again, the answer was no, she said.

“I said, 'If I take it off, will you hold it?’ 'No.’ ” she recalled.

When she finally returned to the conveyor belt, the Rolex was gone.

TSA contends Showalter never had a Rolex on her wrist that day.

And there was a glitch: Security cameras apparently weren’t working, according to Showalter and TSA’s response to inquiries by U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw, R-Fla.

“Basically, they called me a liar. They treated me like crap,” said Showalter.

We're just oozing sympathy here, aren't we? OTOH, why would anybody wear that expensive watch/jewelry on a flight? Gonna impress the other passengers or FA's?
