One day, this wealthy industrialist was vacationing down along the Sea of Cortez when he came across a peasant sitting in the shade and hand carving a piece of driftwood into a figurine.

What's that?" asked the industrialist.

"Oh, it's just a playtoy for the K*ds, they play with them, bust them up, throw them back into the sea...." replied the peasant.

"Will you take $20 for it"

Sure" replied the peasant.

"Wow, I can take this back north and sell it for $100...Say, how many of these can you make in a week?"

"Oh, maybe 2 or 3."

"What! You need to build a factory and make a thousand a day!"

Why?"

"So you'll be rich man! Rich"

"And then what?"

"Why, you'll be able to do what you like! Take a siesta with the old lady, screw around, do what you like"

"Listen mister, that's what I do now."

I've seen variations on this tale but they all make the same point (and it seems to be the real CR catch-phrase)--work to survive and enjoy, and let tomorrow bring what it will. Sounds like a plan to me. O/W work your whole life to make your fortune and then spend all that on meds and procedures to keep you alive in your declining years and/or have some one steal your future. Meanwhile you're an adjunct or feedstock for somebody else's ambitions. Better not to be a vassal or serf in the first place, or at least do it on your own terms.

We all make choices for good or ill. I made mine, you made yours...and I don't see where luck enters into it. I was 41 when I entered the Postal Service and deliberately sought it out for the pay, pension and benefits--the same choice was available to all. After 10 years service, I deliberately sought out a lower-paying niche within the Postal Service for the relative freedom afforded me as a janitor--the same choice was available to all Posties. I also made an informed choice to never marry or have k!ds--the same choice was available to all. No tears nor regrets now or ever for my choices--how about you, Brother LB?
