Post subject:  your favorite Bob Dylan song

Wonderful as it was to read about a vocalist who never wrote anything and a bunch of psyco-dilli tunesmiths, let's get real here: What's your favorite song by Robert Zimmerman--the pride of Minnesota?
I don't have just one, I have 3: "Shelter from the Storm", " All Along the Watchtower" and "Lay Lady Lay".
The difference between the Beatles and Bob Dylan? Richie Havens did the Beatles, Taj Mahal did Dylan. This comparo is totally bogus as "Richie Havens Sings Beatles and Dylan" demonstrates (if you like either you need to get this CD--see AllMusic.com for further proof), but even he did a better job on the Beatles whilst Mr. Mahal's "All Along the Watchtower" is THE definitive version. conclusion: Dylan's got soul, and I'm all with that.
Back to you, Chet.

i've been to 70+ dylan shows. i love the guy, others can complain about his voice all they want - i find him to be a genius and his shows are entertaining (to me and thousands of other Bob-heads).

if it weren't for dylan and ho's, i'd be a richer man - at least monetarily.

to choose a favorite depends upon the state of mind and my usual state of mind gets the most joy out of hearing "just like tom thumbs blues". i went through a "tangled up in blue" stage and anything from "time out of mind" stage. "desolation row" got me through some rocky times. currently in a "time passes slowly" stage. and off course, you can never ever go wrong with "like a rolling stone".

as far as interpretations go ... i love the grateful dead cover of "she belongs to me". you can see an acoustic version here with just jerry, weir, and lesh: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_8obCnsw4c

but my favorite version has to be from june 15, 1985. listen here, 1st song of the encore: http://www.archive.org/details/gd85-06- ... sbeok.shnf

"You gotta serve somebody" and "Jack of hearts" ?? not sure of title but Big Jim did not know his name, he was sure he saw that face before, maybe mexico or on a wall somethwhere.

I think Hendrix did "watch tower" better IMHO

Anything on Blood On The Tracks, especially Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts! 8) 8) 8)

A close second would be the very early on The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. Lot's of early classics on that one. 8) 8) 8)

Brother Xman00 and I are not opposed on versions of "All Along the Watchtower"--we're complementary. They are 2 such different takes that direct comparos don't make sense--a forever song done by towering musical geniuses--How do you compare? The wise man (which I don't claim to be) appreciates both.
Little joke here--I think we ought to take up a collection to get the shift key fixed on Brother Bigbossman72's keyboard--unless it's a deliberate "archy & Mehitabel" thing.

No, I don't think he's a free-verse cockroach--I'm just sayin'...

(Some techy stuff to improve YouTube video and audio quality):

once you pull up a video, go to the URL and add this parameter to the end of the URL (without the quotes): "&fmt=18" ... this will create a H.264 mp4 version of the video with AAC stereo audio that will be higher quality (if the original uploaded clip isn't too crappy to start with, and many on YouTube are). I believe the resulting video is also suitable for iPod and videophone use.
