Post subject:  3 1/2 innings to the WS Championship??
Should be great sports theater tonight, of course if the game gets played. 4 at-bats for the Phils to 3 for the Rays. I guess it's like playing only the 3rd period in the NHL Finals or last quarter and a half in the Super Bowl!

Hamels spot is up 1st tonight, so don't the Rays HAVE to have both a lefty and a righty up and warm? Don't the Phils HAVE to put a righty pinch hitter in to force another pitcher to come in to pitch to Rollins?

If you are not a true baseball fan, then I guess you won't care at all. But if you are, then this is set up for baseball strategy at its finest :!: :!:

So far the four games of the World Series have averaged 10.6 ratings making it the the second-lowest series ever, only edging out the 2006 World Series between St. Louis and Detroit which had a rating of 10.1 over five games. (Source AP Wire Service)

But I am happy for you Tstef527, when you are a fan, few things can stand in your way of watching you favorite team play. But like ID said, one of the things that can stand in your way is NO game due to rain.

Unfortunately TV rating are driven by size of the market of the participants. While PHL is a decent size media market TB is very small. If the participants were the Cubs and Yankees the ratings would be off the wall. Really has more to do with size of the TV market then the participants or the quality of the teams.

I agree. When Boston won the World Series nearly every TV in Boston was tuned in. Those that weren't were at Fenway.

It's not just the size of the TV markets, the amount of national appeal that the teams have also plays a large role in ratings. Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs and Dodgers are essentially national teams that draw eyeballs, so a mix-and-match among those four would get big ratings (not just one of the teams and some nobody like the Rockies, Angels, Padres, Tigers, etc.). No one outside of Philly cares about the Phillies, and the Rays essentially don't exist, plus the whole state of Florida cares only about football.

Bingo to both Tom and ID. Definitely the Tampa market hurts the overnights and subsequently the overall ratings. But maybe the bigger reason is...there is no villian! No Yankee/ Red Sox haters to tune in and no real draw for casual fans west of the Mississippi.

All that said, I don't give a rats ass what the ratings are, I am going to watch no matter what. Do I really care if Joe Shmoe in Topeeka, Kansas watches?

Oh yeah, real baseball fans will watch no matter what the teams are. That's enough for at least a 7 rating for something like a Rockies-Rays series. The Philly market is what's pumping up this series.

Now, a Cubs-Red Sox series would have gotten American Idol-like ratings for FOX, if not higher. But of course that didn't happen because they, along with the Dodgers, suck suck suck. :twisted: :twisted: :D

"Nobody outside the Philly area..." is disputable but those of us who care, care PASSIONATELY. I wearing bi-focals, bring 6 eyes and a LOUD voice to the proceedings. We have the best-record-in-baseball team on the ropes and the knock-out punch will be tonight (weather and Bud Selig permitting). GO PHILLIES!!

I am not a Floridian but have observed the success of the Florida based football fans that HikerTom talked about: Dolphins, JAX, University of Florida, Florida State, Miami, South Florida, and more. I think Texas and Oklahoma are huge football fanatics as well.

Why do you think Los Angeles the second largest media market in the United States doesn’t have a professional football team? And it's not everyone there eats tofu and drinks soybean lattés.

You are right about passionate football fans elsewhere DiegoC. I would probably go so far to say the football fans in Fla are pretty much fair-weather.

That is certainly the case for the Fins, Bucs, Jags, and Canes. Gator fans are Gator fans and are pretty stout and will pack the Swamp for ANY opponent. Nole fans are probably in between Gator and Cane fans...maybe a little closer to Gator fans in that they will pack Doak Campbell for most games.
