Now consider these 3 referents, 2 in pop culture: (1) crime thrillers/ cop movies/ revenge fantasies realized--The '60's were a high-water mark with such as "The French Connection", the original "The Italian Job" and "Bullitt". Now we have the trashy excellence of Frank Miller's "Sin City" and the darker Director's Cut of Mel Gibson's "Payback" and so many more gems to be savored. (2) Soul music and R&B--no,no, not the "Music of Young America" watered down for, um, mainstream America but the real deal--Memphis, Muscle Shoals, Chicago. There's been an amazing resurgence not just by the Original Masters (Solomon Burke, Al Green, Steve Cropper with Felix Cavaliere, Howard Tate to name just 4 have all had oustanding recent releases) but also young groovemasters in that solid tradition (Duffy gets all the press but how about that Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and a bunch of others bubbling under the Hot 100). Blessed times are these, say YEAH, say HELL YEAH. (3) Now the 800-lb gorilla--a pointless, interminable war in Asia. To say more on this would be to overtly politicize this thread, but you get the drift. All in all, I expect the Hippies, Yippies and Zippies to pop up at any minute.
