Being a Chicago guy myself, I can tell you that there is an unwritten, universal understanding amongst the good and decent people of my city that you don’t take a parking spot that someone else has just shoveled after a snow storm. There is nothing worse than spending hours outside freezing your nuts off, with wind chill factors in the negatives, clearing out a spot in four feet of snow, only to have some douchebag unsuspectingly slip in and park there when you’re away. Usually this is prevented by placing lawn furniture (and/or any other household items that are available) out along the curb to stake your claim, but that doesn’t necessarily eliminate the possibility that some utterly classless asshole will simply move your stuff to the side and park there anyway.
Although I find the parking of a vehicle in a space that someone else shoveled to be a bold-faced affront to civility and good manners, I believe that murdering the offending party is a little extreme. I personally would have retaliated with the widely accepted method of flattening their tires.
