Coffee Pickers Needed
Inside Costa Rica
If you are looking for work, to earn extra money or beat the boredom of daily life, the Instituto Costarricense del Café (Icafé) has put out the word that it needs some 45.000 foreign coffee picjers for the 2007-2008 harvest.
In total, between 175,000 and 200,000 people will be directly employed in this year's coffee harvest to pick some 2.6 million "fanegas" of coffee, according to a press bulleting put out by the Icafé,
The "fanega" is a unit of dry capacity for grain equivalent to 46 kilograms. The annual coffee harvest begins in November and extends to February. The Ministerio de Trabajo (Labour Ministry) also predicts the need to hire another 87.000 foreign workers for construction and agricultural jobs for the coming year. Manual labourers from Cuba, Honduras, Mexico and Colombia are favoured, according to Labour sources.
