My friend was with me in SJ but he didn't speak Spanish. He wanted to impress the girls and wanted me to give him a few phrases to memorize. I told him when they ask him what he likes in CR to say he likes the beaches. Me gusta las playas. But because Spanish is a romantic language the noun changes gender according to the sex of the speaker. I told him because you are a man you must make the noun masculine by removing the "a" at the end and replacing it with an "o". So when they asked what he likes in CR he was telling the girls "Me gusta los playos" ( I like the homosexuals ) Boy did he get some strange looks.

Magnum,

If this is your assumption, then I am guessing that you are getting some odd looks, as well. :D

No just some false information I gave to a friend for a joke.

Your "correct" español is a little off... it should be Me gustan las playas. It should be gustan because playas is plural. You want to say they are pleasing to me, not it is pleasing to me.

Your joke reminds me of a story from last year when I brought a newbie friend. We were in Jaco in a restaurant. He wanted to practice his Spanish, so he ordered a beer then he wanted a glass. He remembered that the word is vaso (pronounced baso). The waiter returns and says "would you like anything else?" My friend says "Dame un beso".

The look on the waiter's face was priceless. I wish I had my camera. By screwing up one letter he asked for a kiss, instead of a glass. OOPS!   I laughed for about 5 minutes.

When I was first living here and met girls who would ask me if I tengo esposza, my answer would be "solo hombre". Finally I was told that I was saying "only Men" when I thought I was saying I am a single man. Apparently saying Hombre Solo would have been ok. :P

After taking five different Spanish courses over two years I have come to the realization that it is really easy to make a mistake in this language by changing even one letter, or better yet, having the same letters but putting the accent on a different syllable. Still, I look forward to practicing as much as possible while I am in CR and making a lot of mistakes to laugh about later.

Orange, it a good thing your friend didn't want a dark or black glass!

Dame un beso negro!

FYI, the sex of the speaker is mostly inconsequential, it's the "assumed" sex of the object....

la playa is feminine
el beso is masculine...

that's what you go on, more than the speaker...

However, that WAS funny!

QBF

Yes I know adjectives change gender to match the noun but I was phucking with my friend when I said you are masculine so make the noun masculine. Just to get him in to say it incorrectly with out suspicion.

Thanks
