  i thought this is a smack talk section :?: :?: maybe you can post a definition of smacktalk from the WSJ, so we are all on the same page

Two things:
It's the "Smack Talk and FUN STUFF" Forum, and we're heavily emphasizing the latter;
I'd let pass without comment smack talk from somebody who had contributed something useful instead of dropping a turd in the punchbowl (that smacktalky enough for you?).

We've explored the coves, marshes and fringe areas; now let me bring us back to center-channel:
Jon B. blends '70's soul sensibilities with '90's hip-hop attitude, and does it well:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_cj04asVRo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBl7tzlQIoM
Robin Thicke's breathy voice is suited to the slow jamz he writes and sings:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gowKd52khyw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abWD7EKD7Gs

Some folks might think this guy doesn't belong or he's more a blues than soul singer, and his voice can be painful to listen to. You judge:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8R0eUBGrxg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVunhGb4XFg

SERIOUS NOTE: There is an organization entirely privately funded (no Govt. money at all) that uses music playing/singing/writing to rehabilitate wounded traumatized veterans. They do marvelous work. Here's a WSJ article and their Website. I contributed the equivalent of 3 sessions with Janette:

As what, a Blue-eyed Soul singer? Absolutely! And it was mentioned and linked above.

Ron "Pigpen" McKernan. the balls of the Grateful Dead. When he passed in 1973, that was it for me listening to new Dead Music after 1972 or seeing them in Concert.

Agree with Brother Zunbake on this guy.
I should maybe rename this Thread "...SoulFUL Singers" cuz then we could list and discuss pre-Soul era singers/groups (you betcha I'm talking about Doo-wop). The present torchbearer being Kenny Vance--he dates from back in the day and gave Donald Fagen and Walter Becker their start pre-Steely Dan

Agree with Brother Zunbake3 about"Pigpen".
Maybe I should re-title this "...SoulFUL Singers" cuz then we can go back to the preSoul era (you betcha I'm talking about Doo-Wop). The keeper of the flame is Kenny Vance who goes all the way to back in the day--He gave Donald Fagen and Walter Becker their start pre-Steely Dan and is still out there doin' it with the Planotones.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6X4OJrnJ0Pk

ADD: I decided to cut in some vids by Kenny Vance:

Zunbake,
You're absolutely right about Pigpen. You'll probably enjoy a link I posted to a great performance of his a while back on this now pretty comprehensive thread.

Thanks Tranquilo, I was sad watching it as that was the last year he ever performed before dying in 1973. Bummer.

Mike Finnigan:

Going back almost 40 years, we have this cover of Son House's "Death Letter" (which is probably one of THE best covers ever...far surpassing Jack White's cover): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1X1FzFq_o8

...and going to more current times, here is with a sustained cover of Part Time Love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSdyhZDfFuk (This one is for us, Zunbake....).

and a couple of years back: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3XP3iyUqdI

Oh...hell....here he is again killing Albert's Born Under a Bad Sign: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9day-FsZl4c "i been down since i began to crawl...."....ain't it the truth....."bad luck and trouble been my only friend....i been down ever since I was 10...."...."if it wasn't for bad luck....i wouldn't have no luck at all...." "wine and women....that's all i crave....it's a big legged woman gonna carry me to my grave...."...!

Finnigan's command of the Hammond B-3 coupled with his set of pipes is really something to behold. (Check out who did the B-3 work on Hendrix's Electric Ladyland lp). He plays regularly in SoCal and tours with Stephen Stills when he feels like it.

PS: If you go here: http://www.myspace.com/mikefinniganb3king you can select an awesome cover of "Can't Get Next to You" the boy done did with Stills....."I can turn the greyest sky blue....!!!" AMEN....

Mike Finnegan, never heard of him but he is great!!! Did not know he did work on Electric Ladyland? What cuts? Rainy Day? Also, regarding Can't Get Next To You, my favorite Version of The Temps' song is Savoy Brown's on the Street Corner Talking Album. Dave Walker was the singer with SB at the time and he certainly can be submitted here as well. Walker also does a great cover of Willie Dixon's Wang Dang Doodle on that Album!
