I didn't forget them--I ignored them. Little Richard is basically a one-trick pony and Buddy Holly died before his talent fully flowered. Richie Valens coulda been a monster too.
Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley both co-equally made Rock'n'Roll, coming from different angles. Mr. Berry was the total package but to dismiss Elvis as a mere interpreter of others' material is to do him a severe injustice. What say ye then about The Righteous Brothers and Three Dog Night? All brought a substantial body of Black/alternate songs to a wider, whiter audience in an honest way. That's a bad thing? And BTW how much of the greatest soul material was written by White writers? Didn't matter to the original singers and it sure doesn't matter to me.

Are you out of your mind :?: Stop embarassing yourself. I suggest you read about the huge and wide influence that Little Richard has had on generations of performers across musical genres...

Bro Gringotim--Let's just say we agree to disagree about Little Richard's total production and overall influence. If you want a nearly-out-of-control R&B guy, he's the paradigm...but not the only one and there were even a couple White boys peddling that experience. Did he do country? Did he do Latin? Did he sponsor others to do something, anything in music? We are talking about legitimate claimants to "The King of Rock&Roll" and he just doesn't stand with the others. Not to deny the influence he had, it just was not as over-arching as the 2 main contestants.

Read comment #1--it says it all. While Mr. Young may have had a strong part in re-defining R&R and incorporating all manner of influences (industrial, Country), he didn't create it in the first place. That's what the debate is about.

I too enjoy all the Neil Young I can get my hands on. Here are two mackdaddy examples:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9adAljIaKYc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1Ncuu8MfBk is dedicated to our one and only Cujo:

When I walk on by, girls be looking like damn he fly
I pimp to the beat, walking down the street in my new LaFreak, yeah
This is how I roll, animal print, pants out control
It's Redfoo with the big afro
And like Bruce Leroy I got the glow

Girl look at that body
Girl look at that body
Girl look at that body
I work out

When I walk in the spot, this is what I see
Everybody stops and they staring at me
I got passion in my pants and I ain't afraid to show it
I'm sexy and I know it
I'm sexy and I know it

When I'm at the mall security just can't fight them all
When I'm at the beach, I'm in a speedo trying to tan my cheeks
This is how I roll, come on ladies it's time to go
We headed to the bar, baby don't be nervous
No shows, no shirt, and I still get service

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, yeah
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, yeah
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, yeah
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, yeah
Do the wiggle, man!
Do the wiggle, man!
I'm sexy and I know it

I'm sexy and I know it

While Neil Young did not write that particular song, he certainly does cover it well.

Here's the actual mix of the original song:

And lets not forget the race music pioneers i.e. sticks McGhee, Wynonie Harris, Louis Jourdan, Big Joe Turner and on and on back to Mr. Johnson!

Don't recall somebody hijacking their own Thread before...or should the title be changed?

Oh my word. Hall monitor is on duty again.

What a stick in the mud. The inability to think abstractly is now the subject of discussion. This web site and this forum are for fun.

Some are simply this board's equivalent to a clock watching cunt. 8)

Tell me again (I obviously didn't get it first time around) what sector or type of music did Neil Young bring to a wholly other audience? 'Cuz the genuine contenders Elvis, Jerry Lee and Chuck Berry sure did. A case could be made for Jimi Hendrix but my objection to that is the same as Buddy Holly--died too young to have the over-arching impact those 3 did. Case closed--game over.

Yeah, Neil Young is one of the best things ever to come out of Canada. I remember his early years with
Buffalo Springfield and CSN&Y, and buying his early albums 'Everybody Knows This is Nowhere' and
'After the Gold Rush' in '69/'70. Crazy Horse were great. Didn't care too much for his next few albums.
I was glad to see he reunited with Crazy Horse several years later. One time he was playing 'Rockin in the Free World' on SNL, and he was playing so hard that he broke a couple of strings and just kept on playing. I'll have to see if that video is on YouTube.

Found it :D (not on YouTube). It's from SNL in 1989. The video quality isn't that great, and the audio is a little
out sync, but anyway...
(he's got an Elvis t-shirt on :))

Better video, but the audio's low...
