Easy on that conference power point thing you put together there Santas. I am a little wary of any ranking system that has the SEC 4th :!: (I am not an SEC fan by the way)...but their schedules are straight brutal. No other conference can boast the road opponents the SEC does.

That a very valid point Tstef527. The major problem with ranking system Santas presented is that it based strictly on total winning percentage. It makes no accommodation for strength of schedule. Play 2 tough games every year and 10 turkeys you are going to compile a great winning percentage but not going to garner any national ranking.

You would be hard pressed to convince me that either Texas or Oklahoma was superior to LSU over the past 10 years.

"Wet Blanket" Jazzbo here--what again are the graduation rates for these schools? With what kind of degrees? How much does the NFL contribute to these "minor league" clubs? What happens to a student's scholarship if he get too hurt to play? I'm really no fun at all, am I?

I would agree with all of that ID. As an FSU alum, I just want to see both programs back at elite status again. (OK so maybe mine more than yours    but you know what I mean).

For 15 years, that game had a direct relationship on the national championship match ups. I want that back :!: :!: And I think the ACC needs that as well.

Hey Jazz

Graduation rates: very skewed in all directions, especially if the schools get hit with alot of underclass players turning pro early..they get counted against the graduation rate. I would challenge someone to take some random 100 student samples across the campuses. My bet it is pretty similar. Especially if that sample has K*ds with similar backgrounds. I could make a pretty good argument that some of the K*ds would never see a campus like the ones they are recruited to, much less matriculate at one.

Majors: my guess is it is wide ranged as well...FSU has a Rhodes scholar candidate (Myron Rolle)..and I'm sure a fair share of PE majors :!:

NFL: they provide huge dollars as motivation for the elite players. CFB is big business all by itself and doesnt need subsidation from the NFL.

Not sure about the scholarship injury statistics...

Can give you the rates for Florida schools.

Quote:
The NCAA released the graduation rates for athletes at all member institutions yesterday.

Today we'll go over the graduation rates for Football players and next week we will post Basketball and Baseball.

University of Florida 80%
University of Miami 76%
University of S. Fla 66%
Florida State Univ. 53%
University of Cent. Fla. 42%
Florida Atlantic University 33%
Florida International Univ. NR

Clearly these numbers demonstrate a major problem. When you consider that both UF and Miami lost several players early to draft their numbers which already the best in the state become already more respectable. But the numbers for UCF and FAU in particular, schools that are trying to develop a reputation both in sports and in the classroom are pathetic. Florida Atlantic has been trying to tout itself as a public school alternative to local K*ds who want to travel to Florida or pay big bucks to attend Miami. Clearly for schools like FAU, student athletes are being used as promotions to build the visibility of the school and once they exhaust their NCAA eligibility no effort is made to graduate them. The same appears to be the case for UCF.

UM does not have a degree program in physical education, sports management, etc., I can not speak for the other schools. Granted players are given tutors, mandatory study hall, accountability, etc., but their graduation rate exceeds the non athlete rate for the same freshman class entering with scholarship athletes.

to Brothers Tstef527 and Irish Drifter--Those numbers were much higher than I expected and appreciate you both responding in the gentlemanly CRT manner you did. How do you say it? "A victim of his own prejudice"?
Now back to the regularly scheduled programming. Er, Go, Rutgers!!

With ex UM assistant coach Greg Schiano as head coach of the Scarlet Knights they have a great chance of becoming a major player in NCAA football.

Glad you asked.

Nebraska:
"96 all-time CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, a nation-leading total."
(CoSIDA - College Sports Information Directors Association).
"21 of 25 Seniors are expected to have earned their degrees by next May."
"15 Nebraska players were named to the 2007 academic All-Big 12 team."
"Nebraska led the Big 12 in exhausted eligibility rates for the 5th straight year and boasted an impressive 94% exhausted eligibility rate for the 2nd consecutive year."
"The Nebraska football team had 42 players named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Spring Academic Honor Roll. Last fall 39 players were named."

As for the NFL, "Since the start of Big 12 play in 1996, Nebraska has led all Big 12 schools with 59 players selected in the NFL draft."

No, I don't walk around with these stats, I just happened to print the 12-page media game notes packet yesterday.

GO BUCKEYES, They are favored this year to win it all, the vegas odds have them picked, but they always lose in the BCS final.

Pre-season polls do not rank them number 1.

AP has them #2 after Georgia and USA Today has them #3 after Georgia and USC.

Mostly likely means that none of them will finish #1. Rarely do the pre-season picks wind up at the top at the end of the season.

Nice numbers, Wit. I take it those 59 players selected since 1996 include Lawrence Phillips and Scott Frost?

Nothing against your team, just breaking balls. You sure did travel well to that '02 Rose Bowl. Good luck on a good '08 season and a return to prominence in the Big 12.

Thanks for the kind words on Rutgers, ID--my NJ chauvinism shing through.
And as a general mea culpa, I offer this link, an overview of this season and why this commentator thinks it'll be one of the best ever:
