Here's the original Bloomberg View article this article was based on. Makes some good, hard points--got 450 comments too. Didn't see an answer to Brother Papa Smerff's question though.

When I first read the article "Canadians Richer Than Americans" I thought it was very amusing given the fact that our Canadian dollar was so weak for many years. I thought the board, and especially my American friends, would get a laugh out of this which is why I specifically posted it to Smack Talk & Fun Stuff.

Unfortunately there are some on the board who feel the need to demonstrate their political correctness and attempt to turn everything into a political or racial argument. Is it any wonder why long term members such as myself don't bother to post anymore.

I believe the issue is the placement in the "Smack Talk & Fun Stuff"--this invites the all that between enlightened commentary and smarmy bushwa. I agree with your premise however--a recent Post, appropriately here, was near-ruined by this.

And exactly what is the difference as it pertains to this article? And why would I care? Or was this an attempt at humor? In which case it begs the question as to how this is funny?

Had to laugh when I saw this in the comments section:

Quote:
That's cause they don't have Obama ruling their country and Millions of freeloaders and Illegal Aliens mooching off the taxpayers.

In my work, I've seen that Canada (and Ontario in particular) have lots of people sucking the system for both welfare and failing to pay income tax. So, it's not true that we don't have our share of freeloaders. The Obama part, I'm not qualified to comment on.

The Canadian banking system has a lot to do with this.

The american banking system is, by comparison, quite a bit more irresponsible when it comes to lending policies.

In the U.S. with everyone having their real estate value drop close to 40% I can not imagine having four more years of the same. It may not be the same , it most likely will continue to fall. It seems the person in charge thinks that the money comes from another source not the people who risk everything to get ahead in life. If I could cut my losses at a reasonable amount I would be an expat. It will come to a decision for people to live off welfare or work. It is almost a 1 worker to 1 person drawing some type of government benefit. All I can say ,how can a person claim to know all , be so arrogant with never having a real job. A small business owner works 24 hours a day. His worries do not stop when the door closes at 4 O'clock. His paycheck depends on profit not an unlimited source of overspending our money from taxpayers. Or borrowing knowing it will never have to be paid back. Are Canadians richer I say hell yes! There is no way they have as many unproductive people that are in the U.S..

Clearly we don't have as many people sucking the welfare teat, but that's due to the disparity in population between our two countries, but on a per capita basis, it's probably close. Granted, Canada hasn't been as hard hit as the US by the recession, but we have other shit that we're taxed for, ie health care...and our tax is at a higher rate I think than yours.

That may be true, but when we get throat cancer at least someone will take care of us.

Canadians will become even richer than Americans in the future. While Canadians are investing in resources and precious metals Americans are being pumped the paper assets which mean nothing, especially when the treasury is printing money at will.

In a few years when gold is sitting at $3500, copper prices have doubled, rare earths reach new high (due to inflation and high extraction costs), and the american paper assets are worth next to nothing we will see the real wealth disparity.

"Richer" is a multi-level word. I'll believe Canada is richer than the U.S. when they produce a music as deep, powerful and far-reaching as the Blues.
