usa 2 spain 0

our local sports guy said it best. if this happened to any other country the party would be on; in the usa its not even the lead sports story. my time in cr has given me an appreciation of the poporlarity(sic) of soccer

Same same…

This win is comparable to the USA Hockey victory in the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic Games, no way we should have won against the best team in the world.

If you think Football is big in CR, go to Pattaya; all the Brits, Euros, and Aussies… there is a game on every night, in most every bar, I have actually started to enjoy watching a good match… or maybe I just enjoy the surroundings.

I was messing around on the computer late last night and turned on the "instant classic" replay of that game after it had been on for about 40 minutes. I can't believe the USA won. It seemed like the entire time Spain was taking shots on goal, and the few times the USA would gain possession they would quickly turn it back over to Spain on a bad pass.

Soccer (futbol) I can understand being so popular. I've even enjoyed watching a game or two myself.

But for the life of me I can NOT get my head around cricket. What a useless, illogical and moronic game that is.

You have to be a British aristocrat, Indian or Pakistani to understand that “game”…

Maybe, we are possibly just catching up, a bit. I just don't like soccer moms who are worried about a boy getting hurt in a sport (ie hockey or football). Plus, would the USA ladies success have anything to do with our involvement with the sport? Now, football, sorry, no foreign standouts that I can remember! Oh yea, a couple of guys from Hawaii (damn, US again).

Simpler, they may just want men to think they are as perfect as they want to appear to them, trying to hide what they consider to be the ugly truth about themselves. And I may be reading more into it than is there, but I do believe they consider the basis of the lies to be justified."

In many of the other countries of the world the best athletes play soccer. It is a very cheap game to set up and play. All they need is one ball, and the goals can be anything. Numerous people can play on the cheap, using just one ball.

If the top athletes in the U. S. chose soccer over other sports, we would have an elite team, year after year.

Which REALLY makes you wonder how crappy the game is if it is so cheap to play!

Just having some fun with this.....Is it the chicken and the egg kinda thing?

Is it really because or best athletes play and grow up with other sports (DUH, yes of course IMO). OR have the other countries just not warmed to football, basketball, baseball in mass numbers yet? They definitely are in basketball.

This always happens every so often. The US team does something to makle people notice and pay attention, then it's right back to the usual who-gives-a-phuck situation.

Soccer is popular around the world because it was spread by the Eurpopean colonial powers. Here in the US, we rejected Euro sports just as we rejected British colonial rule. We made our own sports: we turned soccer and rugby into our version of football, cricket into baseball, and we invented basketball and, with Canadians, hockey. Soccer, rugby and other Euro sports were only played in colleges, mainly the old-line eastern schools like the Ivy Leeague. Being "Euro" was the thing to be for young upper-class men.
