I am moving from one area to another. I called my local gas company last week requesting my gas be shut off on or about June 11 because I was moving.
I got home this past Wednesday and found out my gas had been shut off already. Of course I didn't know this until my burner went out while I was cooking something; and it was after 7pm.

I talked to the gas company first thing the next day and they said that they had only received the request to shut off the gas and the date had not been specified. They did admit to the mistake after some "discussion".

Here is the funny part:
They want $624.00 to turn it back on even though they made the mistake.
$574.00 for reconnect ( turning the valve in front of my house) and $50.00 for a leak inspection which has already been done to conform to a state mandate. AND they did not leave a notice because I was moving.

Needless to say I am not having it turned back on and will have to use my gas grill and a newly purchased camping burner for a couple of weeks.

Sounds like a problem that the Consumer Advocate/ Ombudsman at your State Board of Public Utilities (or equivalent in your state) might get interested in, and a note to the local big newspaper's Consumer Advocate columnist (they're always looking for a hook for a column). If it's happened to you, it's happened to others and this is how case files get built. Monopoly power--ain't it grand!
