Even with my basic Spanish I followed the main story line, BUT, what was in the briefcase that Zulema allowed herself to get beat up over???

The actress playing Zulema, the Dominican, is actually from Puerto Rico.

Yes. The suitcase was suppose to contain documents/visa as promised to her.
