Being the cynic that I am, that sounds way to much like “TICO LIGHTNING” to me. (AKA Jewish Lightning) The place really needed an overhaul, and again I am a cynic and can’t help but wonder if a little remodeling wasn’t in order with the insurance company footing the bill!

Ah, please get the place fixed up and open again soon, I miss my chicken, cold Imperials, little chicklet girls and beggars, the cats running through the place, and the ever present flies. It is one of my favorite stops and all of the aforementioned gives it its character.

Also damaged was the second floor of Chelley's, the 24-hour restaurant that has been a San José fixture.

Well, I guess I won't be getting a late night snack here this week.

As a matter of fact, the fire started at Chelles and affected the mariscar.

RBC is right. Until Mariscar re-opens this might be the time for some of you guys to expand your horizons. One joint that I like that is also right in the Gulch (just on the other side of Avenida 2) is Pollo Campesino.

Actually, Mariscar just did a lot of remodelling a couple of years ago. The covered courtyard improved a lot. My first thought when I saw the AM Costa Rica story was the wood fire, but they claimed it was a short circuit upstairs at Mariscar. It looks to me like the AMCR article mixed up Calle 7 and Calle 9. Chelle's is on Calle 9 and Avenida Central.

Just got back from downtown and, not that is is important, it would appear that the fire started on the second floor of Mariscar. The damage is most severe there. While it is hard to tell from looking at the damage it seems like Chellas might reopen fairly quickly but Mariscar is severely damaged.

Pollo Campesino (as recommended by Prolijo) is also a long time favorite of mine. It pre dates Mariscar by a number of years and the food is good and very reasonable. It is on Calle 7, just south of Avenida Segunda ( 1 block south of Presidente)

Post subject:  Pollo Campesino

When I first came down to CR, Mariscar was a Chinese/Fish place, but the downstairs area was pretty ugly. I used to go to Pollo Campesino all the time, but my last visit there I got some chicken that was nearly raw. That has only happened once in 15-20 visits, but I started going to Mariscar for chicken after that. For that matter, ABC, a block East of Mariscar has chicken, though not done on coffee wood, like the two places mentioned above.

Hopefully, based on what I observed today as to the damage to Chellas and based on their long history as a San Jose landmark, they will be up and running shortly.

Pardon my ignorance....but, is Masicar just right down from the Presidente...about 20-30 yards walking toward the right as you exit from the front of the Presidente?

I eat there all the time, one pollo, arroz, and frijoles at a great price, but I never knew the name of the place.

Thanks.
