Hi all,

What do you recommend for sushi in SJ?

Is there any Japanese owned and operated Japanese restaurants here?

Thanks in advance

I undertook my own research.

MATSURI Rofrmoser, 6/10, devoid of atmosphere, okay food, expensive for what you get.
naccionsushi, Paseo de la flores 7/10, nice atmosphere, great staff, big portions, average taste

Best is Bamboo in Belen, 9/10, great vibe, small place, excellent sushi, average service.

Matsuri - 10 locations in the central valley. One in most malls near the cinema. Since the pandemic they have become pop up kitchens mostly servicing delivery 2x1 orders. They also provide a Chinese food operation (Wok to Box) and various bowls (Pokes & Ramens) available only as app delivery. Food is generally OK, but nothing special. Check the locations on UberEats for specials.

Naccionsushi - An international chain in 11 countries, mostly in Central and South America. A very wide array of Asian and Asian Fusion food. This place is my choice if the hovia wants sushi, but I want something else.

Neither of these venues have independent chefs, suppliers or menus. There are plenty of other places, but I have not found any place I would consider special. Apart from tuna, pargo or sea bass, CR doesn't have a huge variety of seafood. It is hard to find these fresh in the central valley. The best I have had was at Nao Sushi Lounge at the InterContinental in Escazu and Na Praia in Escalante, but neither was worth the price.

IMO - Ceviche or whole cooked fish are the best seafood options in CR.

I have corbina (sea bass) almost every day when I'm in country, but sushi it isn't.

When I'm in country, my go to is Tsunami Sushi. There are 3 locations. One near San Pedro mall, one near the Multiplaza in Escazu, and one in Jaco. The one in Escazu is the best of the three. One of the few places I've found with really good salmon sashimi.

Honorable mention to Bamboo Sushi in Tamarindo if you ever get out that way.
