Since moving out of Amon, I have been trying a lot of restaurants in the Rohrmoser/Pavas/Escazu area. Here are some I highly recommend. I have visited each with a presentable chica 36yrs younger than me and felt totally comfortable. Dinner for 2 at Furca, Nunc, Jaguar Negro, Botankio ran $120 to $150. Tacopedia $30 to $40.

Rohrmoser
Furca and Nunc - both have the same owners and share staff. Furca is a full sit down restaurant with indoor and patio seating. They also have a chef's table for fixed price tasting meals. Portions are small but reasonably priced so you can order different sides. Nunc is a cocktail bar with tapas. (Reservations)

Escazu
Jaguar Negro - Upscale Mexican. Funky cantina, classy terraza. Wide array of regional dishes. The steak is good, but I recommend the other dishes more where the spices and cooking techniques shine. Portions are huge and one side will feed 2 people. My date and I shared one appetizer and a single side with separate entres. (Reservations)

Botaniko - Cocktails, guest DJ's, younger crowd. The chef here trained under Jamie Oliver and the food is eclectic. They have a ladies night, but not a place to find company. (Reservation)

Pavas
Tacopedia - Medium priced authentic Mexican. A lot of locals go here. Nobody speaks English and they don't take reservations. No alcohol, large servings, good place for groups and parties. Portions are huge.

All these have food porn on Instagram

How far in advance would you say one would need to make reservations for Furca, if one wanted to take his friend, and a couple of Ticas there to experience the Chef's Table Tasting Menu?

You make all reservations via WhatApp (506 8349 7777). I have had no problem making regular reservations a week before. The one time I did the Chef's table was a special advertised event. The cost was $150 per person (5 courses with wine pairings plus pre-meal cocktail & coffee with dessert). JSYK, it was pay-in-advance, if you or your guest are a no-show you still pay).

I definitely like to get out of the gulch after about 2 days even if for the afternoon. I usually end up in Parque Sabana for lunch after a late morning/early afternoon nut bust in one the close by MPs. My fav is Rosti Pollos (mid range more for lunch than a nice dine out).

San Pedro/Los Yoses is relatively close to the gulch also with many options.
