Any rec's for cheap eats near Sportsmens? Any sodas in walking distance? Will be staying at Sportsmens as always but grow weary of the menu and prices. Thanks for any info...

Try La Esquinita de JM directly across the street from La Amistad. I recommend the Olla de Carne with a tortilla con queso.

cattycorner from La Amistad & across street from aforementioned Esquinita de JM.

I go once a trip for their 1kcol beers & a bowl of delicious chifrijo

don't order the big bowl unless starving, the boca menu bowl is a right sized lunch

has outside seating area (covered) on 2nd floor with view of the area

El Pastor empanadas is next to the pharmacy across from the hospital. Also, the food court next to the bus stop between the Del Rey and Central.

Café Mundo is just down the road from SL. It is not as inexpensive as a soda, but the prices are reasonable.

One of my favorites, just a 10 minute walk from SL, is La Criollita.

+1 on La Criollita, they have an excellent breakfast, first time I ever had deep fried bacon, I know I've lived a sheltered life.

I usually stay at the Sportsmens and eat a lot of my meals there. It's not cheap but the quality is good and the portions are pretty large, not always a good thing, especially if you are trying to limit your calories.

Except for true sodas away from the gringo areas you really aren't going to find "cheap" food.

A few of my alternate restaurants have already been mentioned, Soda Peru, La Criollita, La Esquinita de JM and Chelles for late night.

I like to hit Bar Pos for a couple of meals. Their food is reasonably priced and pretty good. They have a daily special that is usually a good value. Wednesday night is wing night. I forget the price but it was very reasonable. Fridays they have a fish and chips deal and on Sundays they have 600 colones hot dogs.

Not cheap but somewhat reasonable is the Selina hostel just down the street from the Sportsmens. The place caters to somewhat entitled European and some North American backpackers. They have places throughout Latin America that look like they would be fun if you were young and single.

They have a pretty good menu, mostly bar snack type food. The tacos were good but small you need a few to make a meal. The burger was good though they like to cook it on the medium rare side. If you don't like it that way, be sure to ask for it least medium well. Also regular and craft beers and a better wine selection that the Sportsmens.

Their fish and chips is pretty good. The sauce they serve with it is awesome. Kind of a garlicky tartar. The price is less than the fish fingers in the SL but the portion is smaller.

If you are in for a bit of a walk, there are a couple of good sodas in the Central Market (mercado central). Lots of food for a good price. Lunch only. Also great people watching on the walk between there and the SL.

Walk down the the road from the Del Rey toward the Hotel Presidente / Balmoral. At the intersection take a left instead of a right. You will see the Hamburger Factory. Really not too bad and the price is reasonable. Nearby there are also places you can get a large slice or two of decent pizza.

Well, now I'm hungry. Gonna make some breakfast.

It was cheap in 2006.

Have you been there lately? Then again, cheap is a relative term.
